I heard what they do is scan your mail and put little ads that relate to your mail. It gets "smarter" over time so you'll get ads that are really targeting you.

But let's deal with your real issue, why are you so mad?

you have to open an email to see the ads. they show up on the right side of the email and are relevant to the text in the email.

Gmail is technically still in beta and is invite only, so it's one of the hardest types of email accounts to get since you have to know someone.

And by "hardest" I mean "easiest."

FYI - I've got 50 gmail invites if anyone needs'un.

FWIW, I think Google said somewhere that all their new products would be released as Beta, and kept that way. This was evident in their AF joke:

http://www.google.com/googlegulp/

"11. When will you take Google Gulp out of beta?

Man, if you pressure us, you just drive us away. We'll commit when we're ready, okay? Besides, what's so great about taking things out of beta? It ruins all the romance, the challenge, the possibilities, the right to explore. Carpe diem, ya know? Maybe we're jaded, but we've seen all these other companies leap headlong into 1.0, thinking their product is exactly what they've been dreaming of all their lives, that everything is perfect and hunky-dory – and the next thing you know some vanilla copycat release from Redmond is kicking their butt, the Board is holding emergency meetings and the CEO is on CNBC blathering sweatily about "a new direction" and "getting back to basics." No thanks, man. We like our freedom. "

Furthers their 'fun for geeks' mentality, and doubles as a subtle jab at MS releasing final products that behave like betas.

Bison can probably confirm (or deny and smack me in the face) this.

5. Are there ads in Gmail?

Yes, but they are small and unobtrusive. They don't fill half your screen and we don't make you read them just to get to your inbox. Ads are never inserted into the body text of either incoming or outgoing Gmail messages and you won't see any pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail.

Gmail users only see relevant text ads, similar to those on Google search results pages . The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.

Ads are matched using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program, which already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. Here's a sneak peek of how ads look in Gmail.
