Hero was in seat 5 with about $2000. But moved asap to seat 1 as soon as Villain sits down with 10k to my left. Villain's first hand is aces on cutoff and makes it 100 to go after 2 limpers. limpers and BB call. Flop is J 6 3. Checked to Villain who bets 300. BB who is very good makes it 900. Villain calls. Turn blank and bb bets 1000 villain calls. River is another blank and bb bets 1500 villain instantly calls. Bb flips over a set of sixes and Villain's aces are cracked.

A few hands later after i change to seat 1, I get Q /images/graemlins/heart.gifQ /images/graemlins/diamond.gif in MP with about $1500. Folded to me I make it 70 to go. Button calls and Villain in BB calls. Both have me covered. Villain is the dude who bought in 10k

(Pot=$220)
Flop: J /images/graemlins/spade.gif 9 /images/graemlins/spade.gif3 /images/graemlins/heart.gif

Villain checks, Hero bets 200, Button folds, Villain calls.

Turn:4 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif

Villain checks, Hero checks??? (Should I have bet?)

River:7 /images/graemlins/club.gif

Villain checks, Hero...how much do you bet here?

I bet $500 on the turn and fold to a raise.

As you played it, bet the $500 on the river.

Don't understand the check on the turn, but that aside...I'd say probably $400-500, and depending on a read, fold to a strong raise. I think this calls for a value bet, although an argument can be made for "what would he call you with that you beat?". Could very easily a missed flush draw, which only opens up the door to a checkraise bluff. If he sat down with $10k, I'd say he's likely to pay off with an unimproved J here, just nothing outrageous.

Since you have position, how about a bet on the turn and a check on the river if he calls? I think it's a mistake to let him draw for free.

Your desire to keep the pot small is good, but you keep it the same size by betting the turn checking the river, unless this guy is a habitual stop and goer (which is pretty rare in my experience).

i figure a followup bet on the turn will make him fold a lone jack. By checking the turn, it opens my range of hands and allows him to bluff or call my river bet with a lone jack.

I like that line a lot more with A-A including the As. What's your plan if an A, K or spade hit the river? There's roughly 20 cards I really don't want to see on that river.

why'd you check the turn? you're giving a free card against your overpair? yuck.

I bet ~$450 on the turn.

However, since you didn't bet I bet around $200 on the river. Maybe he has a weak jack but looks like he won't pay you off anyhow.

Depending on the opponent, betting $200 could open a serious can of worms. That's probably my least favorite line.

a legitimate question: are you okay folding an overpair on that drawy board getting 2.5-1 against a $10k stack player if he raises the turn after your $500 bet?

im not sure I could, just wondering your opinion yeti.

I think you really messed the turn up. Now if you bet the river, he won't call you with a busted draw and given his check on the turn and river, he does not have a hand strong enough to pay you off. Bet something close to the pot and hope he calls.

Check turn, bet river would be better if

a) the board were rainbow
b) you had kings or aces.

As it is, there are two possible draws, and two overcards, so betting the turn is mandatory.

Why would you ever bet this river? What is possibly calling that you beat here besides AJ/KJ?
