Lets start a list and maybe we can get a poll out of this if there is considerable debate?

Anyways my vote goes to Britney Spears' cover of The Rolling Stones' "Satifaction"

her cover of "I love Rock & Roll" also sucked, but not as bad

Btw, as stated in the other thread, "These boots were made for walkin" was a crappy song to begin with, so I don't really care what the cover sounds like.

Not a Dixie Chick (or country music in general) fan by any means but this is nowhere close to the worst cover ever.

Other bad covers from recent years include:
Jessica Simpson singing that Top Gun song
Some random band doing a really crappy version of Lynard Skynard's "Simple Man"

The aforementioned are all very bad. These are not worse, but make me crazy.

"Broken Arrow" by Robbie Robertson, massacred later by Rod Stewart.

"Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straights, later redone by The Indigo Girls.

Both songs were important to me when I was a sentimental teenager.

A pet peeve: A band "covers" a song but doesn't change it.

Example: Yellowcard (god i hate shitty "emo-punk" bands) covered Don't You (Forget About Me) the theme song from Breakfast Club. It isn't an amazing song but should be a fun song to play and cover. Of course they played it the exact same way and it sounded like [censored].

It sounds to me like the chordings are entirely different in the cover, and it's entirely sterilizing in its effect.

This trend of altering the best parts of 80's pop/rock started with Alien Ant Farm's cover of 'smooth criminal,' although the little inversion they do to the melody for 'annie, are you okay...' is passable and almost original.

Still a shameful way to make a quick buck with a radio single, if you ask me.

Most of the answers, and Sponger's "These Boots are Made for Walkin'" example seem to show that the question is worst cover compared with the original. But my answer invovles remaking a song that was terrible to begin with.

Last week I defended my love for Willie Nelson. But one thing he did that was completely inexcusable was his cover of "Time After Time" by Tiffani, Cyndi Lauper, the Bangles, Wilson-Phillips or something.

Because punk bands have been doing covers like this forever:

Less than Jake covers "867-5309 (Jenny)" in '95 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000E0EY/qid=1118791433/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-5163823-6204947?v=glance&s=music)

New Found Glory releases From the Screen to Your Stero in 2000 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004S51F/qid=1118791548/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-5163823-6204947?v=glance&s=music) covering: Never Ending Story Theme Song, I Don't Want to Miss a Thing, Goonies 'R' Good Enough, Glory of Love {Theme from Karate Kid Part 2}, and (Everything I Do) I Do It for You.

Alien Ant Farm released their CD in '02 I believe. Punk bands have been covering old pop songs forever. See old Pennywise and Lagwagon cds.

I think it is amusing the first time you hear it (just because it is so random) and then pretty much unlistenable.

I don't think it is the travesty that Spears did to the other songs (because they are so good and it's tough to take Gin n Juice too seriously), but pretty meh.

And for the record, I cannot BELIEVE Shinedown's version of Simple Man made this thread. I am not a Shinedown fan, and I am a Skynyrd fan, and I still think this is one of, if not the, best covers I have ever heard - especially the live one recorded in-studio at WAAF in Boston, beats the hell out of the studio version, and even Skynyrd's original. It is second maybe only to Tool's stellar version of No Quarter...

Every song Phish has ever played, and the # of times they have played it (http://www.ihoz.com/raw.htm).

So I guess whatever you were on at the "concert [you] were at" was strong enough to either a) make you think they played Gin and Juice or b) make you think you were at a Phish concert.

Now run along and get a clue (or find me this mythical setlist w/ Gin and Juice).

That remake in the 80's of Peter Frampton's "Baby I Love Your Way." I have no clue who the artist is - and I use the term, "artist," facetiously.

Not a great song to begin with, but the sappy remake truly makes me want to puke. Casio keyboards and drum machine ballad beats at it's worst.
