Villain is 33/15 preflop, slightly passive postflop but nothing startling (right around 1.5 AF on each street statswise; all the hands I've seen him betting have been top pair-type hands but he hasn't made it to showdown very often and hasn't had a lot of confrontation).

Bet/fold the river. You don't want him checking behind if he's scared of his kicker. An AF-1.5 player isn't going to raise the river with any hand you beat. He would have a hard time raising A6 but he will gladly bet it if you check.

Is he capping the flop if he's scared of his kicker? I dunno about bet-folding the river.

What do you have to lose? It costs you one bet either way. This is straight out of TOP. He will call with more hands than he will bet. It's better to bet as underdog than to check and call as an even bigger dog. In this case it's really clear since, given your read, it's impossible for him to raise the river with a worse hand. No way he can raise with AJ.
