"Blow".
This movie flopped in the theatres and the critics hated it too, so I figured it probably sucked, but I rented it last night and I felt it was really good.
Johnny Depp's performance is fantastic, easily one of the best performances of the year. Ray Liotta does a great job too, as the hard-working blue-collar Dad.
Great movie. Entertaining from start to finish, believable, and with a good ending which is rare.
No drug war preaching (pro or con) either, like in Traffic, just a good story.
The only drawback is the weak addition of Penelope Cruz's character, which is part of a totally undeveloped love story. Her character is a caricature and you don't really understand the chemistry between the two. But, that's typical of any hollywood movie that includes a romance that isn't the main part of the story. Johnny Depp's incredible performance is well worth sitting through the crappy scenes with Penelope Cruise. Oops, I mean Cruz. Freudian slip I guess.
