I'm gonna go ahead and assume he's been running hot, but he is a very winning player already. I don't really understand how your other friend is having insanely bad luck, but yet up 70k so far this year. That's still pretty good.

My guess is that although he might have "bad luck", he probably just goes more on tilt after losing pots and ends up making more poor decisions based on it. Other factors that if you're running hot, people give you more respect for some reason, so you might get away with more bluffs. Also by basically the same style, that doesn't really mean a ton. There are PLENTY of subtle differences that's hard to say "we play basically the same style". Calling on river vs bets, raise bluff river, c/r turn with big hands, draws, etc. I have a feeling your other friend is much worse than the friend that's "running hot".
