I read a book which inquired the claim that CIA and Bin Laden previously cooperated. They conducted very thorough investigation and concluded that CIA never funded Bin Laden but that they were aware of his activities in Afghanistan and funded groups that cooperated with him. It all changed though in 1991.

That bin Laden worked for the CIA is old news. This does not mean the U.S. was somehow involved in 9/11.

He did not work for CIA. He funded guerilla groups paralell to CIA-funded groups.

He wasn't paid by them that I can find (I thought he was for some reason, but I can't find credible evidence of that right now). He was, however, trained by the CIA.

Not to hijack or nit, but I have read a lot about this from credible sources. He was never trained for fighting, in fact he never was any great fighter at all. He just created a myth around it. Basically he ran some sort of recruitment centre where you would go and receive weapons and training. It was located in Pakistan. It was financed by Middle East donations while CIA financed other groups directly.

The US troops in Saudi Arabia in the preparation to the Gulf war led to his hatred to US and thus stop of his "cooperation" with CIA. He believed that no non-moslems should be allowed to go to certain areas of Saudi Arabia and declared war on the US.
