Do the math in your head.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000.
Now add 30. And another 1000.
Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10.
What is the total? Scroll to the bottom to find out.

I dunno, maybe if someone had spoken this to me one line at a time I would have got 5000, but, like many people, I kinda guesstimate before doing actual arithmetic, and seeing 4 1000's and 4 2-digit numbers, 5000 just isn't a tenable answer.

I did exactly the same thing /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Just tried this on my accountant girlfriend and heard her do it out loud and she came up with 4100. Her mistake came at the point after where you add 1000 to 3090 followed by adding 10 to 4090. Somehow this ends up triggering some verbal imbalance and she spouted out 5000. Meanwhile, she can write a one page email in three minutes without making a single typo, spelling mistake or other error.

Strange.

people think of the 20, 30 40 numbers into hundreds instead and that makes 5000, probably just some weird thing the mind does because it is easier.

A similar thing that is funky where the mind plays tricks on you, I failed it the first time-

The 'And another 1000' part.

Notice I would never actually be a stickler for this normally, but it was clear from the way the question was asked it was gonna be some trick answer. I got 4100 immediately and thought that was easy, so I assumed the answer had to be 3100 (to be the trick part). I'm guessing this still may be the trick answer and the OP is trying to get as many people to think they have the right answer before he tells the real one, which is 3100.

Huh? I think that it's just because when people read through the question quickly, they mistakenly read 10, 20, 30 and 40 as 100, 200, 300 and 400 to come up with a nice round answer at the end, instead of the awkward 4100 answer.

Well, I agree that 98% just seems like a stupid statistic, but I'd bet it's much higher than you'd think. Someone asked me this question verbally maybe 10 years ago, and I remember saying 5000, and I'm very good at math. Actually, I'm only decent at arithmetic, but that's beside the point. If you take on this question not giving it much concentration, it would be easy to flub. I also think that giving it to someone verbally makes a difference too. Oh yeah, and most people are really dumb. I wouldn't be surprised if a good percent came up with a number beside 4100 or 5000 just cuz they can't add.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you were alert enough to get 4100 the first time, you are no doubt intellegent enough to realize why some people would get 5000. So stop the B.S. and quit bragging.

For those who can't understand why they got 5000, I will explain it the best I can. You first start adding them as 10's and not 100's, but by the time you get to 4090, you instinctively add the last 10 as if you were addidng 100's all along because most peolple don't count thousands in increments of 10 in their daily lives unless their job or some other activity requires them to do so. So when you say "four thousand and ninety" in your head, and are then asked to add 10, you instinctfully act as if you were counting hundreds (four hundred and ninety)and round the first digit of the number up instead of the second. This has nothing to do with intellegence and alot to do with how familiar you are with numbers.

Your current state of alertness and whether or not you were just skimming through it quickly are also important factors.
