It would be nice to be able to see the rating of a post before you opened it. That would make it easier to avoid the crap but catch the odd gem.

Even after people started saying "I rate this thread a 1 star!" I had no idea what they were talking about and assumed it was just a stupid inside joke.

Yes, this is exactly why the rating system is so useless. If it showed up on the far right of the main page that would be SWEET. Mods?

It also could be beneficial to allow individual posts to be rated, and then each poster to have an "average rating". Hopefully this would encourage people to make better posts, but it is open to abuse.
