xp pros please

Okay this isn't strictly a gambling siftware problem but I don't normally use windows and for the life of me I can't figure out how to do this simple thing - make windows xp display properties when switching resolutions default to 16b. When I switch resolution between whatever and whatever, the stupid "color quality" drop-down is ALWAYS 32b! Isn't there some control panel/registry or any thing to force it to quit changing from 16b?? My preference would be a way to remove 32b as an option altogether but I'll settle for being able to make it default to 16b.
