Reads: both villains are about 35/8/1 players. BB 3-bet me preflop with KQo the previous orbit, if that is at all relevant.

Okay, good. I just want to make sure I'm not turning in a weak tightie. I just couldn't see do anything else. I smiled when the board paired low on the river and K9s chopped with K8s. Mmmmmmm 3/6.

Why didn't you 3-bet the flop?

My intention was to go for a check-raise on the turn.

That play risks giving a free card to a diamond draw, though sometimes the LAG players don't even take the free card given the chance (preferring to continue their semi-bluff instead).

But I don't know if the risk is worth it to try to protect my hand against Ax or Kx. Maybe just raising 3-betting the flop for value is optimal here, given my lousy position.

Yes, I think 3-betting the flop is in order. Gives you information, and most likely you have the best hand. With your reads, I think a 3-bet is definitely a good play.
