my girlfriend had never played poker before we met and I am an avid player. I am a winning player too. She has taken up poker and she loves to play both online and in the casino.....however, she is not a winning player and also doesnt have a lot of dispensible income, what is a good way to tell her that maybe she isnt good enough to play 5/10 at the taj without hurting her feelings (or losing my money)

Question #1: why is she losing your money instead of her own?

Tell her to play at 2/4.

Maybe you could drop down and clean house on 2/4 with her on those times that she happens to join you to the casino.

she refuses to play 2/4 cause its a calling factory, she doesnt know how to handle loose action

Then explain to her why these tables are the most profitable and easiest to beat. Make absolutely certain she understands this concept. I'm astounded you haven't already done this...

Make her play with her own money. She's just throwing away your money and of course basically throwing away 10 BB is going to destroy your hourly rate.

online, okay....live play she doesnt have the patience to sit a loose action table nor the skill to play a 5/10....ive explained plenty of times, SHE DOESNT GET IT!!!!

maybe i exaggerated the origonal post, she DOES play with her own money but she loses it and then she wants to leave, she doesnt see it as a long term or hourly game, but a luck game

You said in your original post that "she loves to play both online and in the casino." Yet when she plays with her own money she plays over her head, loses it all, and then wants to leave?

Sounds like you need to go to the casino without her. Or if you do bring her, make sure you have already taught her how to read, so that she can pass the time with a book when she busts out of her game--since giving her additional money to piss away just so she won't be bored would be pretty foolish.

Have you ever considered helping her or just being honest with her and tell her what you really think? Might be a good idea, sounds like she sucks.

I dated a poker player once. It will never happen again.

i think you all forget how much you lost when you first started playing. tell her to sit at a cheap table....and before that, get her a good poker book for christ sakes. she deserves a chance....she may become a very good player in the future.

you could also take some time out to practice with her. /images/graemlins/club.gif

Based on everything you said, and only the things you said, she should not be playing poker at all until you teach her the game, or she learns it on her own. The exception to this is if you like throwing away money.

THen she's either an idiot, or you're not explaining well enough.

explain to her why she should be under the table and not sitting at it.

Speak for yourself. My first time playing was in a dorm tourney three years ago. I cleaned up and knew what luck I had had and used the winnings to buy 5 2+2 books and a deposit on Party. Of course I watched the games and did the play mony first. My lifetime net for poker has never been negative, and continues to finance my bank account for spending money, quite well I might add.

Don't want to be mean, just felt like bragging.

And about the guy with his girlfriend, if you have explained why laying 1:2 on a coin flip is not good and she doesn't get it, you better stop giving her money right freaking now. Giving her 100 every time your at the casino doesn't affect your hourly rate??? What limits are you playing???? You wanna bankroll me????
