This has been discussed before. It's called football in the US for the same reason that football is called football elsewhere. In England when the game was being played they called it football because it was played on foot. This distinguished the sport from others such as polo that were played on horseback. American football is similarly played on foot and hence carries this name.

can you imagine if that actually happened how often it would be replayed on sportscenter? i saw a full video of that a while ago and it shows her jumping up in celebration afterwords and the woman they use is SOO hot (read big titties)

Today, the American game is much different from what it was in the begining. Unlike the other "Football", the American game does improve and evolve as teh years go on.

(Although I think they need to bring back the Deacon Jones head slap, taking out of the game was de-evolution IMHO).
