View Full Version : Best rock albums since 1990

CMI, jason_t and I were having a huge debate on AIM what the best five albums in the last 15 years are. I can't make up my mind, there's like 30 albums that could be top five material. They both have pretty nailed down lists.

I'm just glad CMI limited it to just rock, as there'd be about a dozen rap/hip-hop albums that would be up for consideration too.

Post your top ten list. My only definitive ones are:

#1: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco
#2: Nevermind by Nirvana

Other possible candidates for the top ten:
Beck - Odelay!
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Green Day - Dookie and American Idiot
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Nirvana - In Utero
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Radiohead - Kid A and OK Computer
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight, Gimme Fiction
Weezer - Weezer
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

There's no way I could narrow it down so I won't even try, but I just wanted to say how bizarre it is to see Oasis and Neutral Milk Hotel together on any list.

This is a really good list. I might have to throw And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Code (as long as we are putting spoon/modest mouse/bright eyes and such). I think that album is perfect.

My list looks similar to yours, as well as

Pearl Jam - Ten
Tool - Lateralus/Aenima
Weezer - Pinkerton
The Shins - CTN or OIW, depending on mood
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Elliott Smith - XO
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
R.E.M. - Out of Time
Spiritualized - Let it Come Down

IndieMatty

Another good one. Esp. Spiritualized.

Another part of the discussion was how blasphemous I am for liking CTN more than OIW, as well as for liking Yoshimi more than Soft Bulletin.

YHFT is the most over-rated record of the last 10 years. I hate it. I don't get the obsession with it at all. Summerteeth is infinitely better. [end rant]

Here are some gems, in no particular order:

Uncle Tupelo-No Depression (and it's not close)
Marah-Let's Cut the Crap and Hook Up Later on Tonight
U2-Achtung Baby
BashNPop-Friday Night is Killing Me
BuffaloTom-Let Me Come Over
Radiohead-The Bends
The Weakerthans-Left and Leaving
16 Horsepower-Low Estate
Sebadoh-Bakesale

My list, heavily tilted to the music of the last three years or so, since I didn't listen to much music before then. Also, I only took albums from this thread and albums I have in MP3, which limits things a bit

Wilco - Summerteeth
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Broken Social Scene - you forgot it in people
Radiohead - OK Computer
NMH - Aeroplane
Shins - OIW
Interpol - turn on the bright lights
Beta Band - 3 EP's
Postal Service - Give up
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
Badly Drawn Boy - Hour of the Bewilderbeest
RJD2 - Deadringer (kind of hip-hop, I guess)
Libertines - UP the bracket

Others that I just thought of but didn't want to put anywhere:
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance

The lack of Failure's Fantastic Planet on any list saddens me.

Also, the lack of Built to Spill on any list (or maybe I missed it) also saddens me.

Also, Dismemberment Plan.

There are many more, but I'll just go with my top 3 somewhat obscure but not really obscure at all bands.

I have to say, YHF was a great album, but like...not best album of the last fifteen years by any means. I've listened to it over and over and I still can't see why it's getting such massive applause, critical and otherwise...

Like I said, great album, but...I dunno...There are at least 3 Built to Spill albums that trounce YHF, although I'm somewhat biased since I have a man-crush on Doug Martsch.

I find Summerteeth to be superior to YHFT.

I feel Sleater-Kinney should be mentioned, at least One Beat.

#5 Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco
#6 Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins
#7 Funeral - Arcade Fire
#8 Is This It - The Stokes
#9 Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
#10 Oh Inverted World - The Shins

Yoshimi is only a great album for the first 5 or so songs, IMO. After that it becomes merely good. And I may just like Chutes too Narrow more because I heard it first.

It gets dicey after 4...

5. Failure - Fantastic Planet
6. Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut (Needs Some Love)
7. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People
8. The Beta Band - Three EP's
9. American Analog Set - Promise of Love (Should be much higher but I'm lazy, let's put this at 5 and move everything down)
10. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak (just giving my man some love)

Hum maybe shouldn't be on there. Replace them with Wrens - Meadowlands and give them honorable mention.

Honorable mention goes to bands like Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Wilco, Interpol, Strokes, and a bunch of other bands that are too popular to make it on my top 10 list because I'm an indie rock kid and I just looooooove that obscure [censored]. /sarc

I think your point here is not valid. The fact that indie bands are getting mentioned is because the people who are posting in this thread are into music in general, and have therefore listened to many more records, including mainstream music and indie music. The lists I would be skeptical of are the opposite.

In any case, the only point these threads really have is to give people more albums to listen to. Or at least that is how I feel.

So post your list. It's not like this is a discussion trying to find the "right" list. Despite my joking comments re: PBob's dislike for YHF, clearly threads like this are for... uh... discussion. So if you have a list quite, quite different than the indie rock stuff, then friggin' post it instead of whining about how you don't know anything on everyone else's list.

If you take it so personally when people of similar music taste talk about music that you haven't heard, perhaps you should stop being a giant blubbering vag[/i]ina and either:

A) listen to some of the albums you've never heard of even though they show up in all of these threads

or

B) post YOUR THOUGHTS ON ALBUMS SINCE 1990 so that there's a variety of tastes represented

Talking about non-mainstream music does not equal elitism. Not to mention the fact that a lot of these bands AREN'T EVEN THAT OBSCURE. Modest Mouse, Beck, Weezer, The White Stripes all have had substantial top 40 radio time. Many of these bands have. Many that haven't have shown up on film soundtracks and are recognizable through that.

Good album, not Top 10. There are two Hum albums that are better if you're into that kind of music anyway. And I doubt even those are Top 10 either.

Some obvious choices include:
Nirvana - Nevermind
Nirvana - In Utero
Pearl Jam - Ten
Tool - Undertow
Radiohead - OK Computer
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

I think Kid A is a great album but I don't know if it's a great rock album.

Some less obvious answers might include:

Leatherface - Mush
Karate - The Bed is in the Ocean
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Fugazi - Repeater + 3 Songs
Pixies - Doolittle
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Slint - Spiderland
Morphine - Cure for Pain

There are a LOT of others I haven't had time to dig out.

RHCP- BSSM
Weezer- Blue Album
NIN- Downward Spiral
Oasis-Whats the Story...
Radiohead-OK Compute(maybe my favorite)
Sigur Ros-(first one)
I like both Shins albums
I like Two Incubus albums
Modest Mouses new albums is really good, I also like the new flaming lips album. Jimmy Eat Worlds- Bleed America

I also like some harder stuff, Disturbed-Believe, P.O.D-Satelite, etc.

I dunno, I probably missed a bunch, but rap is my fav anyways.

We're talking about opinions here. Anyway, if you read my previous post you'll see that at least two educated people aren't crazy about Nevermind.

I just don't think Nirvana is that great of a band. Although Jack makes fun of Fantastic Planet for sounding a lot like Nevermind, I don't see that, and I think if you spend a little time with the album you'll see they are more musically talented than Nirvana and the songs are just better.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

Oh yeah, I'm a donk, there is no doubt that Jawbreaker's "24 Hour Revenge Therapy" and also "Dear You" belong in this group.

A few others I forgot:

Weezer - Blue Album
Social Distortion - s/t
Hot Water Music - Fuel for the Hate Game (can't believe I left this one off)
Soundgarden - Superunknown

And even though it was released in 88, "Nothing's Shocking" pwns most of your lists. Just want to throw that out.

It's possible I listened to Fantastic Planet before Nevermind. I just think I didn't get into Nirvana because I didn't want to because everybody else was listening to them. Snobbish, yes, but like...whatever. Good, possibly great, but like...in my opinion, eventually meh.

I guess it just has the YHF quality. The songs are so clean and listenable that it just loses it's appeal for me.

Also, I'm a prick and a snob.

I disagree, and I went through a serious Hum / Failure phase. I think Failure's songs grow repetitive and the lyrics are often less interesting. I think In Utero, Nevermind, You'd Prefer an Astronaut, and Electra 2000 are all distinctly better albums, and Downward is Heavenward may be, as well.

So actually, I may have spent a little TOO much time with Failure.

Well, at least we're being civil. I think my lack of appreciation of Hum comes from the fact that I can't get good quality recordings of it. I actually own the CDs too, but I guess when I ripped them I didn't store them at high quality (this is way back when lossless didn't exist, not that I use lossless now).

The sad thing is, I downloaded some Hum songs, and they sound the same, and I was like...AAGHHHH, DAMMIT.

Anyway, Hum is great, I like Failure more, and Another Space Song is one of my favorite songs ever, as is Dirty Blue Balloons.

EDIT: I also happen to be ignoring everything off Magnified, which is a great grunge CD too. Undone, Empty Friend, and Small Crimes are all great. And you can't argue with lyrics like, "Whatever turns you on is fine with me as long as, I just don't get wet"

Deftones - Adrenaline.

It's a pretty good list that I either own or have listened to most of them. They just don't really make the cut for me, at least not top 20. Maybe OK Computer or a Flaming Lips album or something.

I listen to a lot of music. I just feel that the best stuff just happens to be some of the most obscure; there's a correlation in my mind, but no actual causation.

Anyway, for me to work out a top 20 would take probably weeks. So I won't bother. I do know, however, that Fuel's Sunburn would be near the top...

I have heard the criticism before that Nirvana was to simple a band, but I think thats part of what made them so great, just raw energy and emotion. Bar-bones punk/alt/grunge rock. Basically music without the gloss.

Okay, since I have spent so much time discussing this, I will actually attempt to put these albums in order.

Nothumb's Top 10 Rock Albums Since 1990

Albums that don't qualify due to not being rock, but still rule:

Morphine - Cure For Pain
Radiohead - Kid A

Albums released pre-1990 that I wish came out yesterday because they own all you fanboys:

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
Leatherface - Cherry Knowle

Honorable Mentions

Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut
Beck - Sea Change
Shiner - Lula Divinia
June of 44 - Four Great Points
The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good
Nirvana - In Utero
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

Albums it really, really hurts to leave off, but I had to:

The Pixies - Doolittle
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Tool - Undertow
Pearl Jam - Ten
Weezer - Blue Album

Number 11

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
This record was very exciting when it came out and I must say, it stands the test of time. It didn't break the new ground of 'OK Computer' or make the potentially career-ending genre leaps of 'Kid A,' but rather bears the marks of all these albums, all these experiences, and more. A fine example of a band that has aged phenomenally well.

Finally, the Top Ten:

10. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
The Chili Peppers have always had their limitations. Well, two, really - heroin and their lead singer. Anthony Kiedis brings the vocal versatility of a monkey in heat, and lyrically this band is, again, fun but limited. However, the will of this band to make fun, funky music in an era of self-hate, self-pity and self-importance is what really rescues them. That, and their awesome bass player, suprisingly good guitar melodies (given the mortality rate of six-string men in this group) and solid drumming. This album was their tour-de-force, the sort of Black Album for funk-punk as a genre. A perfect melding of good production, songwriting, and energy. Great ballads and party anthems, with just the right balance. Nothing before or since can compare.

9. Leatherface - Mush
Perhaps I'm being stubborn, insisting on including this little album that could on the charts with the big boys. Leatherface are misfits in both the punk and indie rock universes. Punk purists hear the Smiths with distortion and an unintelligible accent, while today's indie rock fans hear a grouchy old man with the same vocal settings as a jackhammer - 'off' and 'loud.' But Leatherface made smarter political punk than the purists and dealt with personal/philosophical topics more searingly and directly than any emo band ever could. Their best albums walk that fine line perfectly.

8. Hot Water Music - Fuel for the Hate Game
Yet another dated, incredibly earnest post-punk band that ol' Thumb is foisting on us. Fine, I'll own up to that. But any post-punk band named after a work of C. Bukowski deserves a place on my list. The thing is, Hot Water Music could easily have been a pop-punk band - catchy melodies, sing-along choruses, optimism and unity. They had it all. But before they almost made that leap, with albums like "Forever and Counting" and "No Division," there was this brooding, blue-collar album. This is the last record they made with the taste of a real job fresh in their mouths.

7. Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Tom Waits refuses to let the singer-songwriter die, fade into homosexual oblivion or become warmed over and trite. He just keeps making beautiful, bizarre, and consistently brilliant albums. 'Mule Variations' has the trademark weirdness ("Eyeball Kid," "What's He Building"), as well as those guaranteed, heart-tugging ballads ("Hold On," "House Where Nobody Lives"), a dash of raunch ("Filipino Box Spring Hog"), a touch of religious silliness ("Chocolate Jesus") and one overwhelming, existential finale to tie it all together ("Come on Up to the House").

6. Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy
While many would take the more polished 'Dear You' for their favorite Jawbreaker record, I would argue that this short and sweet album signifies the moment in which Blake Schwarzenbach found that perfect balance between punk angst, Beat awe, and melodic sensibility. Punk rock looking back on itself and letting out a big sigh (followed by a hacking cough.)

5. Guns and fucking Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Really, shame on all of you for not putting this on your lists. I move that the profanity filter be modified to allow this one particular use of the f-bomb, because there's no other way to say 'rock and roll.' This was hungry, snarling, swaggering white-boy rock in all its decadent glory. Welcome to the Jungle, bitches.

4. Fugazi -Repeater +3 Songs
It's probably cheating to put this reissue, with a 3-song EP included, in as a 1990's release. I don't care, because it's the best Fugazi album you can get. This CD alone is enough of a free pass for Ian McKaye to be an arrogant, self-absorbed prick for the rest of his life as far as I'm concerned. This is post-punk as it should be: rhythmically challenging, dynamic, smart and angry. Before you can mention any indie rock album of the last 8 years, you need to pay homage to the original.

3.Nirvana - Nevermind
What can I say? It changed the world. Sure, the pieces are there in a few other bands of the same time period. But this put it all together. I couldn't even listen to this album for about five years because it was so ubiquitous. Then, one night, we put it on at work in the middle of the biggest pizza frenzy you've seen in your life. And it still kicks ass. The songs stand the test of time, and what this album did for rock music does too.

2. Radiohead - OK Computer
The album that Coldplay has built an entire career around.

1. Slint - Spiderland
If you can somehow regress to high school, turn out all the lights in your bedroom, and listen to this album in pitch blackness, you won't argue. Ask all your precious indie rock bands of today who their daddy is.

Thanks for reading,
NT

*Yes, Gimme Fiction is brand new. I think it's that fu[/i]cking good. If it weren't Gimme Fiction, it'd be Kill the Moonlight.

My list looks similar to yours, as well as

Pearl Jam - Ten
Tool - Lateralus/Aenima
Weezer - Pinkerton
The Shins - CTN or OIW, depending on mood
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Elliott Smith - XO
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
R.E.M. - Out of Time
Spiritualized - Let it Come Down

[/ QUOTE ]

How the hell is Belle & Sebastian considered rock?

Alright, this is "one of those threads", but I'll butt in and give you my version. Warning you wankers, there will be some "shitty" mainstream rock. Whatever, suck it bitches.

#1-Led Zeppelin-How the West Was Won
Rock 'n' roll would be in a completely different place today wihout them.

Fantastic live album, they were ON. Exciting improv/jams/medleys/covers.

All others unordered

-Stone Temple Pilots-Purple

-White Stripes-Elephant, probably. I like De Stijl better though, only because of the old blues cover.

-The Black Crowes-Shake Your Moneymaker
I love this album. Nothing groundbreaking or innovative, sorry.

-Rage Against The Machine-Rage Against The Machine
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW, Tom Morello is great, Tom Morello is good.
Killer riffs.

-Green Day-Dookie

-Sublime-Sublime
Dead on arrival. 40 oz. to Freedom is good too, but this one has more popular appeal.

-Red Hot Chili Peppers-Both Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication

-John Paul Jones-Zooma

I have too agree here. Belle and Seb are great, (especially "If your...") but rock?

Same for both Shins albums and all Elliot Smith, although I'm inclined to say that these two last mentions is better than anything a pure rock list can come up with (slightly overstated, but they are THAT good). Madtown, about your Shins discussion, I totally agree. IMO "Chutes.." is just much more exiting and varied, musically and lyrically.

Other than that I'm surprised so few has mentioned The Bends, in this list it really should be way ahead of Kid A. I'm also pretty sure Lateralus, Siamese Dream, RATM and Nevermind should be in there.

Noone feels The Downward Spiral by NiN deserves a mention?
Anyone heard of a Norwegian band called Motorpsycho?

In addition to a lot of albums already mentioned ("Superunknown" and "Purple" come to mind), Faith No More's "The Real Thing" deserves a place in my top ten.

I think that Summerteeth was kind of transitional for Wilco.

I need to buy more Uncle Tupelo - all I have is Anodyne. ("Long Cut" is sweet).

Also, good to see the Hum references - I forgot to put them in my lists - the pride of Chambana and the U of I school of engineering (well, them, Tom Siebel, Larry Ellison, and Marc Andreeson).

I'll throw my top 10 out there, and get flamed.

In no particular order,

U2 - Achtung Baby
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets
Metallica - The Black Album
Green Day - Dookie
Radiohead - The Bends
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Pearl Jam - Ten

A lot of the bands I listen to aren't on this list (The Shins, Martin Sexton, more Dave, Flaming Lips, Massive Attack, Led Zeppelin, etc) but these are pretty damn great albums since 1990
