What upgrades would you guys recommend to make my computer as smooth as possible when playing poker? I 8-table with PT and Gametime+, and my computer is laggy/slow whenever I do so.

Here are my current specs(the ones that I think matter):

Pentium 4 1.8ghz
Western Digital 80gb hard drive w/ 8mb cache
512mb RDRAM

My best guess is that I should upgrade the RAM. If it's the RAM, how much should I get?

I 8 table with PT and GT+ also and I have a P4 3.2 and 1G of RAM. It runs quite smooth.

Ram is almost always the answer to all pc problems.

Most definitely the RAM. Get at least another 512 and you should run smoothly.

I have a laptop 2.4G with 1 gig of ram, and I am having problems. Anyone know why? It locks up when PT starts running, or the tables start flashing.

the 1g of ram shold be enough, your video card might be sucking a lot of that, just a guess.

Supposedly the new 10K RPM HD's make PT and GT+ run much more smoothly as well. I cannot speak from personal experience, but that seems to be the word on the street.

I just bought a good case, nearly silent (Zalman) power supply and and a silent (Zalman) CPU fan. Best money I ever spent. I can actually hear myself think now.

Running smoothly has nearly nothing to do with your harddrive unless you're dipping a lot into your virtual memory, and the better fix is to add more memory so you're not touching virtual memory in the first place. The harddrive is only used to load the program into memory otherwise.

I onlly have 78xmb or ram. I run 4 tables, Power DVD playing a dvd (Sopranos /images/graemlins/smile.gif ), PT and PV.

XP1900, so thats what, 1.6ish?

Runs perfect. Was running 8 tables before with no problems with 256mb of ram.
If you are running windows XP try setting the poker apps priority higher. CTRL -ALT -DELETE--> Processes, then right click on XXXpoker.exe (Party or coral or whatever) then goto SET PRIORITY....
