View Full Version : Small B&M NL Tourny with Large Ante Structure

My local B&M runs a NL tourny with a $45 buyin (for T1500) and $20 rebuys for the first hour (for T1000) and a $20 addon (also for T1000) at the end of the first hour.

My question is how to deal with the ante structure... rounds are 15 min each... and during the rebuy period, the blinds are relatively small (starting with a single T25 blind for the first round and ending in the fourth round with two blinds of T75 and T100).

Soon thereafter, though, the blinds and particularly the antes increase quickly in size.

T100-T150 with a T25 ante
T150-T200 with a T50 ante
T250-T300 with a T100 ante
T300-T400 with a T200 ante
T400-T500 with a T300 ante
T500-T600 with a T400 ante
etc.

I have played in this structure now three times, and all three times I have done well in the rebuy period and first couple of rounds after the rebuy... and built my stack up to around, say, T6000. Then the T300 antes hit and I have enough stack to stand about two rounds of antes. I end up catching a round of typical offsuit trash and all of a sudden I'm calling an allin raise for the last remnants of my stack with K9o, because at this point that looks like a pretty strong hand and I need to play now because if I wait one more hand, my stack will be just that much smaller.

My inclination is that the large ante size might force me to play very aggressively preflop on nothing... that if everyone folds to me, I basically have to raise allin with any two cards. Obviously I can't be calling allin raises with baby trash... and I had been trying to wait to take a stab in late position, but by late position, the pot is usually raised already.

I find this structure frustrating because I feel like I am outplaying my competition for the first two hours only to get crapshooted out half an hour later. Is this a typical structure (I'm pretty new to tournaments) and, if so, does anyone have a specific suggestion for me?

First suggestion: Donīt play this event.

Second suggestion: Try to talk to the tourney director about this structure. If it doesnīt do any good talk with other players.

Third suggestion: If nothing changes and you still want to play you have to be extremly aggressive preflop. Try to pick up as many pots as possible. Therefore you should play mostly the situations and the players. Your hand isnīt that important.

Good luck

Your first response is very good. Do what he says.

As for typical, this structure is anything but.

I have never before heard of such large antes for those size of blinds. Typically, the antes for a full table add up to a total that is about the amount of the large blind, up to about or a little more than the combined total of both blinds together. For example, if the blinds are 100,200, the antes would typically total between about 200 and 300.

I started playing tournaments about 9 months ago and have played about 15 since then, so let me caveat my statement by saying that I am no tournament expert.

Since your profile says you are from Seattle, it sounds like you are talking about the weekly Muckleshoot tournament. I played in this tournament once and probably will not play in it again. Your description of your experience matches my experience exactly.

If you are interested in playing No Limit Tournaments in Seattle, the Sunday morning tournament at Diamond Lils is pretty good. It has similar buy-ins, rebuys, and add-ons as the tournament you described, but it does not have the antes. The blinds go up a little faster, but it is not nearly the escalation that the antes cause in the Muckleshoot tournament.

Major,

What casino? I know you have played the Muckleshoot one but your blinds are way off unless they have changed it since I left in August.

I have never thought of the Muckleshoot structure as overly fast. It is a typical fast paced small buy-in tourney. Once you get to the final table you find there is a lot of play left because of the large number of rebuys.

If it isn't Muckleshoot or they changed the blinds, then I agree that this is crazy.

This is Muckleshoot. They changed the structure recently. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif I told Judy that I thought it was nuts, and she said that they felt they needed to speed the tournament up.

That's a good suggestion (though hauling myself out of bed on Sunday morning will be no picnic) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. I might give Lil's tournament a shot... hehe.

Thank you for your response. They recently changed to this structure to "speed up the tournament." I felt the structure was dumb, but I didn't have enough experience to know if it was just that I wasn't aggressive enough.

I won't bother with this tournament anymore.

Maybe they need to push it back to Saturday afternoons. That is one of the stupidest changes to a tournament ever!

Say hi to Judy from Ken who played at Little Creek! Tell her this structure is worse than any of the fast LC structueres!

As of tonight, ridiculous antes are gone and replaced with more reasonable antes. I can go back to playing in the tournament.. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
