The game is 5 handed and short stack is about to blind out. UTG pushes so I folded, although I would have won, but AJ is often not kind to me. What do you recommend?

You're not in the blind, so it costs you nothing to fold. You're stacks are big enough to steal with success. I'm not even sure I'd call here if I knew for a fact that UTG was pushing any two. hes probably got a small pocket or something.

Based on his range of hands, it should be +EV for you to call. I suppose there are other factors that might make you want to fold, such as extreme tightness of everyone else at the table. However I would generally lean towards calling (and would fold if the pusher was one of the big stacks of course). If you were sure the pusher had any 2, folding is just insane.

Villain had A5o so my kicker would have beat him, but I often lose w/ AJ (although not necessarily late in a game). I had no money in pot so it cost me nothing to fold. If I had money in sb/bb I would definitely have defended it.

if you call and lose, you have like 300 chips left against 3 people with stacks over 2000. you need to double up 2 times to get any FE at all.

Id rather pass on this one, maybe the BB will call and get me in the money. I'll take my chances stealing and hoping other people fold.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that my newbie ass is wrong here arguing with a respected poster, but can you help me with where my logic goes bad? Is it just a case of bubble weakness?

AJ is one of those borderline hands where a call/fold depends on a variety of factors, namely of which is the pushing hands that UTG is going to push with.

If he is pushing with a lot of hands, call. If he isnt, fold.
