View Full Version : Is Gus Hansen playing any events at the WSOP?

BlackGoat

He's been conspicuously absent from the events so far. Makes you wonder about those stories about him skipping town because of debts. Anyone spotted him in Vegas these last days?

haven't seen him down there yet - but i don't know about that other stuff you're talking about.

I don't want to be starting rumours or anything, since I have no way of knowing, but a month or two ago there were threads about him having gone back to Europe because of gambling debts.

I'll perpetuate the rumor.

I heard that Gus Hansen is stuck for a lot of cash. Apparently, he either doesn't want to pay or can't pay.

I think the fact that one of the most talented and well known tournament pros is conspicuously absent from the "mother of all poker tournaments" is enough to prompt further speculation.

trying2learn
06-06-2005, 05:41 PM
i think it's odd he was spotted playing online though - if he's avoiding people he owes money to (alegedly) - why play poker online and piss them off even more?

RicktheRuler
06-06-2005, 05:42 PM
Probably because he is in Monte Carlo and doesn't give a
*%$#.

BadVoodooX
06-06-2005, 05:49 PM
That would be seriously bad news for the WPT, seeing how Gus is their poster boy. Hard to believe though that he couldn't find someone to stake him for just the WSOP NLHE tourneys if nothing else, based on his track record as a NLHE tournament player.

I do not think he needs a stake. He plays on PS all the time, which leads me to believe he obviously has SOME money.

I think he just doen't want to give up the money (i read somewhere it was $4m that he owes.

That rumour was already proven to be bs, why try to continue it? Gus only plays in the bigger buy-in events, so expect to see him at the main event.

Freudian

You are free to cite a reliable source, but as long as it is something you read somewhere it has about zero value.

Beavis68
06-06-2005, 06:13 PM
Paul Phillips has said something to the effect that he (Paul) doesn't want to deal with the gigantic fields. Maybe Gus feels similarly?

trying2learn
06-06-2005, 06:20 PM
i think that's interesting - just because undoubtedly it's all the more dead money in the pot.

i understand it's like a mine field, but that's why (imho) you see the pros this week either going out within the first hours...or making a run at winning the thing.

the +EV in these has to be huge for the seasoned pro.

Freudian
06-06-2005, 06:34 PM
Not all players like to play all different kinds of poker games. And not all of them will feel good about a month straight of tournament play.

I don't see any reason to draw any big conclusions from who has played/not played the first events.

This is probably a bs rumor. More like he likes to lose alot more than that on a regualr basis so its not worth his time to ionly lose 1k or 2k in an event. When he can lose hundreds of thousands or millions elswhere. You will see him for the bigger events i'm sure.

Negraneau said that since he hasn't played this game since he was 4, Elvis will probably be a big favorite, but a deal's a deal.

Good thing paul phillips doesn't think that way either. I'm playing in the smaller events because I can only play a few events, I get more than enough NLH the other eleven months, and I don't consider it a good time to have to fight two thousand people for five urinals (among various other inconveniences that are included with the mega-events.) In general I have no objection to facing large fields: quite the opposite, I prefer them.
