Stupid AIM ads

Aside from not using AIM, is there a way to prevent those movies at the top of my buddy list from playing?

Definitely. Once I got used to Trillian, I love it. It does several things that AIM won't do, and in general just runs smoother. You can also run ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN messengers all through one progam if you want.

Another alternative is to use Dead AIM, which is an addon that removes ads and adds a bunch of features. It costs money though.

Care to expand on this? I used it for about a week, saw no extra benefits and just went back to what I am used to (aim).

It logs convos for you. It automatically moves windows to corners or edges of other windows. And it lets you use all those other programs.
