That 9300 is a huge mofo. How much are you paying? I have a 6000 and I think that's even too big...

That computer will suit your needs just fine... just wait until a deal runs on the 9300 so you dont get hosed.

2 things.

1) buy an additonal 1GB instead of 512. You'll be much happier.
2) Consider buying an additional 9-cell battery, and keeping the 6-cell as a backup. You'll probably like the extra battery life

I was also thinking about getting the 9300. It seems to be the best quality/price that offers a resolution allowing 4 tabling.

cnet.com had some good comparision info. I priced one for $2,300 and chance on the site - 512 RAM. Dell had a $750 "instant rebate" on the site.

Planning to buy in August - so I am far from certain on a brand, but the 9300 seems pretty solid. I have two concerns thusfar:

1) might be too bulky to bring to and from class - 20 min subway.

2) cnet.com had some readers issue VERY negative reviews on the quality of the WUGA when viewed in the native (1900x1200) resolution on the 9200 and 9300 - something about the anti-glare stick placed over the screen, so I would like to see te monitor for itself running four tables first.

definetly let me know if you have tried one

Hi,
Got mine a week ago. It is large, so it is not that new laptop-feeling, but the screen is awesome (remember to not buy standard screen but upgrade to WUXGA) for multitabling.

Plan to bring mine around the world travelling and playing poker /images/graemlins/cool.gif.

The Dell price for that setup would be $1753. I also intend those $750 coupons. They seem to have them almost all the time. I might upgrade one or two more things to bump the price up to qualify for the coupon.

Will consider the 1GB memory. My original plan was to keep the 256 that comes with it and add 512 for a total of 768. But I'll consider buying 1GB. As for the additional battery, I keep it plugged in 99% of the time. So I don't think I'll need it. The only time I don't have it plugged in is when I'm traveling.

The Dell Inspiron 6000 is a slighty cheaper option... if you can live with a 15.4 inch monitor with 1600x1200 res. What you give up in monitor size you gain in mobility.

I bought mine in Norway and taxes etc. is different so the price cannot be related. I did quite much research though and it was definately the cheapest 1600x1200-laptop (remember to upgrade) I could find here. It was even cheaper than used ones from other brands.

If you upgrade the screen to UXGA, it will have 1600x1200 resolution. As for the size, I plan on keeping the laptop at home most of the time. I will have the option to bring it out, but it will be a rare occasion.

I posted this in the last laptop thread too, but one thing to remember about the 9300 is that it's one of about three laptops to have DVI. That means if you buy an LCD, you can eight table using the LCD and screen simultaneously. This is huge for most 2+2'ers and saves tons of money.

Oh, and I have your setup (with 128 MB video.) It rocks.

What is LCD and DVI...kinda still learning the terms. Any since you seem like a good source, what computer would you recommend?

I got the Inspiron 6000 a couple weeks ago. It is slick. I can get up to 1920 x 1200 resolution, but usually keep it at 1600 x 1200 to put a little less strain on the eyes.

Thanks to those who have posted up the $750 coupons. I added some features and got the professional version of office and still paid less money than a basic model.

I went with the 6000 with WUXGA also after sseing a $750 off deal posted here in early April. I'd absoulutely recommend the 6000 to anyone. Don't know about the 9300. Seemsm like it would be too big.

9300 has 17" screen. 6000 has 15.4" screen. 9300 has some more base power I believe, but at extra cost and size. Both (with WUXGA screen upgrade) can fit 4 tables w/o overlap.

I mean LCD as in an external monitor - the 9300 lets you attach an external screen through its DVI (direct video out) connection and use both it and the laptop's regular screen at the same time. Most laptops, including (I *believe*; double check) the 6000, can't do this.

I own a 9300 and love it. If the 6000 doesn't have DVI and you ever decide to 8 table, you'll have to buy a desktop system on top of it. That sucks.

Is there a way to find out if it has DVI? I didn't see it on the Dell website.

Can you upgrade the video card (I am assuming that's what it is...)?

adanthar

It's not a video card issue. A DVI port is just a connector on the back of the system, like a PS2 port or a USB port. No way to upgrade that.

The bottom comment on this page says the 6000 doesn't have DVI. (http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Inspiron_6000_for_Business/4514-3121_7-31257675.html)

The 9300 has a DVI and a VGA port, but you can only use 1 at a time. The 6000 has a VGA port and you can definitely use it and the laptop screen at the same time for 8 tabling.

I got the same computer w/ the 512MB ram.
No problem at all.
And I tax my system w/ 4 tables, PT and other stuff running in Back ground.
I am sure it won't hurt. Just don't think it's essential.

Big old bump.

I was thinking about getting a 6000 so I can start 8-tabeling, I have a samsung 213T that I use right now with a desktop.

I would use the laptop instead of another moitor for the mobility aspect.

I am somewhat confused as I've seen different reports here. can I hook up my 213T to the 6000 vga output and 4 table on it? Will it allow a high enough resolution?

I just got the 9300 about a week ago. With tax and all it came out to about $950. The screen is awsome I can watch movies from my couch with a few people watching from the sides without any eyestrain. You should at least get the 512mb ram. This laptop is the best deal I found. It received a 7.8 on cnet.com which I think was higher than any other laptop. The only drawback is its size, but its perfect if you plan to multitable.

It will do either of those. You have the option to choose once you hook-up the second monitor and it's recognized.
