Advice on Moderating OOT

In his PMs to me, Mat's comments about me moderating OOT were the bare essentials. He said:

You would have no obligation to do anything; the option would simply be at your disposal.

and

Please do not abuse this or these privileges may be revoked.

Despite a few goofy comments in other threads earlier tonight, I obviously have no intention of being an "OOT Overlord". I intend to take moderator actions only when they are appropriate and when they support the type of environment we want here in OOT.

I've mentioned to Mat that the main problems I've seen in OOT over the last few months are (1) threads created soley to insult other posters, (2) duplicate threads, and (3) threads about poker.

I'd like feedback from posters if they also think these are problems with OOT which should be subject to my weapon of choice: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/lock.gif

The heavy duty actions (like banning posters) is something I'm leaving to Mat. I won't be banning anybody other than obvious spammers (like our religous friend of the past week).

I think that's a good list of the three types of posts that should be moderated but don't lock EVERY thread in those categories, some are still viable.

The biggest problem with OOT, IMO, is too many threads. You come back the next day and that thread you wanted to revisit on favorite CDs is now buried 10 pages deep. I'm sure this has been brought up before, but we need to subdivide OT further, something like:

Music
Movies
Television
Sports

I'm glad that there are a couple moderators to stop all the recent spam, but I think that it should stop right about there. Sometimes repeat threads or poker posts can be entertaining, even in OOT, especially in the case of a 'repeat' thread where the original was months ago.

Anything else should be fair game. This is OOT.

I don't even care if someone posts poker questions or whatever. They are just going to get crap answers anyway and will be ridiculed accordingly. Hell, that's half the fun.

Even the bickering between posters should stay, as long as it is simply bickering. There is nothing wrong with swearing at someone and there is nothing wrong with insulting someone....as long as it is not racial or the like...In most cases, it simply reveals the posters true colors as a person...

For poker content threads, I will move them if I have the ability too. I think I do but I do not no if there are limitations to that.

To make things clear, I'm not banning anybody or deleting any threads other than ones which more than 99% of OOT would agree with (Jesus spammer, tubgirl, etc.). My moderator actions should be few and far between (unless some of you decide to have some fun with me).

If it is possible to move threads, then Chuck should set up a "hidden" forum (viewable only to moderators) where the new moderators can move threads they think should be deleted. That way, Mat can review their decisions and restore any threads that shouldn't have been deleted. Mat has made thread deletion mistakes too by his own admission, this could help him reverse those mistakes as well.

Dynasty-
You can do a lot of good with just a bit of effort. Depending on how the board software works, the following things would be of immense help-

1) Merge threads that deal with the same subject
2) Remove any NSFW pics that get posted
3) Lock/delete the truly nonsensical threads

No need for bannings or anything (leave that to Mat, when there is a track record of trouble-making and ignoring of repeated warnings).

I help out as a moderator on another (non-poker) site, and try to stay as invisible as possible while still making the site useful/fun/interesting for the users.

Links are fine- it is the use of the <img> that is troublesome. I don't need to have my boss walk by when I mistakenly pull up a half-paged sized view of some girl's kidneys viewed from below, if you get my drift. Images are also stored on my PC; these are easily retrieved by the IT staff.

This forum doesn't need moderation. It needs less shitty posters. WPT needed a moderator, and I think Dynasty is a great seleciton to do that.

Half the fun of OOT for me was letting our quick-witted posters bash on people who came to this forum and:

1) Insulted other posters.
2) Made duplicate threads.
3) Wanted to talk about poker.

OOT having a nanny takes away the fun of OOT. Mat usually gets around to things that need to be dealt with fast enough for me, and if you want to help alleviate his strain, there are other forums in much more dire need, such as the Zoo or WPT.

2) Lock obviously spammish/stupid threads.
3) Ban spammers and obviously rule-breaking posters.
4) Don't do anything else.

This is not a new era of power. Stop giving people pink names and special post count titles. Mat was the ideal and excellent moderator. Follow his example. What has been done so far makes me sick.

OOT is about stupid threads. The forum was created for dumb threads. I don't like the way things are turning out on this forum. Someone deleted my poop thread. Then banned me.

[/ QUOTE ]This sucked, I never read the poop thread, but that is the reason I read OOT, not to jack off to pictures of yankees, harry potter or whatever new technology wacki has found.

I dont think the new moderators should have the power to delete, only to lock. Also I think all Locking decisions should be explained. If this goes much further I might have to make a OOT Sucks post!
