It's an invite system cause it's still in beta. It allows google to control the population on the servers, though by now, as most people can tell, we're happy to make a lot of invites available to people.

I'm not buying the company line there, Bison. :P

On that note, are you officially still in beta? I think I've had the account since at least July 04, and it's been easier to use than Yahoo and Hotmail since about day 15.

I think jstewart has it right. Invites make Gmail cool.

Yeah. It's still in beta. The nerdsplosion when we leave beta will be deafening.
