So, despite the fact that i probably drive like ten miles a week, i now have to get a new car since my old one died. As im still just a small stakes grinder, and especially since im hoping to spend a couple of years in costa rica soon, im just wanting something that will last 12-18 months. What we think about this (http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/ida/inventory_frame.jsp?dealer_id=104438&result_car_id =null&mis=IADABDMGDA312&car_id=null) ?

hum,,, apparently the link wont go directly to the page. Sorry about the extra work, but sort by year, and its the green 93 explorer.

thanks a ton

Yo man, I was born and raised in the car business and I think buying that car is just asking for trouble in terms of reliability.

Early Explorers tend to have transmission problems around 80k miles. This one has 104k, which means either it's not one of the ones that has those problems, the transmission is already replaced, or it's seriously overdue. Get that checked out.

Other than that, I had a 94 Explorer for a while, and it ran great until my sister took over control of it 2 years ago. She ran it into the ground. I expect you can do better than that though, so go for it.

You are bound to get the typical SUV haters here but as cheap cars go I think is one isn't bad and for a 93 will retain some trade in value down the line if needed as long as the interior is not trashed. If you could have the engine and transmission checked out some how it would be well worth with.

Yep I was going to include that I know two people with older Explorers and both had transmission problems. I thought my sample size was too small to include but it seems like I was correct.

dont go with these imo. get a toyo/honda/mistu type vehicle. one of those brands that will last a long time with high miles. if you get some junk buick you are just asking to have the car end up at the mechanics once a month.

My buddy's sister had a 92 2-door Explorer one that caught fire while she was driving it.

what he said... basically

On that not this one only has 16K miles and is under $1K

Linky (http://www.autotrader.com/inventory/vehicle_details.jsp?position=44&car_id=183326578&c olor=1&dealerId=104438&make=any&model=any&pass=2&t oYear=any&fromYear=any&toPrice=999999&fromPrice=0& searchFilter=any&sort=make&searchType=all)

I don't get it. Why so cheap??? If it is in good shape I would MUCH MUCH rather go with that one than any 160K car on its last leg.

I had a friend with one of those and I can't tell you how many times I had to drive because his car wasn't working.

Well, that and I'm a better driver.

a 12-year-old explorer will kill you. seriously you are looking at an over/under of maybe 3.5K/year in repairs, not to mention your gas mileage will be terrible. it will be far more expensive than the sticker price.

I have an '89 Bronco II, and I love it I bought it with about 75,000 miles and it now has 166,000. It has the 5 speed manual, though, not the automatic. I had to replace quite a bit of stuff right after I bought it, but it's been pretty good ever since.

I have never disagreed with Matt before, but there is a first time for everything. I have a '93 Explorer with 160K miles, and it runs just fine. We bought it new, and have spent less than $300 in repairs in the 12+ years we have owned it. Having said that, I would have the engine and transmission chaecked out on any used vehicle before I bought it.
