I have a very hard time believing that high school US history courses don't cover Watergate. However, it's certainly reasonable that it would not go into such detail as to mention the made up name of the reporters' informant.

As others have mentioned, those of you who haven't should watch All the President's Men. It is not only a great movie, but it will give you a history lesson and some idea about the magnitude of this story.
