Derrek Lee

Any chance in hell? I know its way too early to even start thinking about it but what would you put the odds at? 20-1?

Jakesta

I don't think Lee is this good. Last year was more the type of hitter that Lee is. I say he fizzles out in the second half.

I would think ARod has a better chance.

That may be so, but doesn't the TC go by league? There can be one in the American and one in the National.

I like Albert's chances better, and he's trailing Lee in all 3 categories.

Let's see, I'd guess he's about 4-1 at best to win any of the categories right now as he doesn't have a massive lead in any of them. That would put it at 64-1 to pull it off.

Jakesta
05-31-2005, 12:37 AM
What about A-Rod's chances to pull it off?

He has big leads in both homers and RBI's.

Also, hsa there ever been a Triple Crown winner who didn't also win MVP?

Who? That just seems ridiculous that someone who won the Triple Crown would not also win MVP.

Ted Williams (2x), Lou Gehrig. Possibly more.

Lee's highest BA in a season is .282. Something tells me at least that number will regress.

4-1 may be close to the correct odds, but 64-1 isn't. The categories are correlated; if he does somehow win the home run title, then he's probably more like 3-2 or 2-1 to win the RBI title. Batting average probably would be largely unaffected by HR's, but BA and RBI have a moderate effect upon each other.

Lou Gehrig 1934
Chuck Klein 1937
Ted Williams 1942 & 1947

What was the justification for not giving Gehrig the award?

In Cochrane's favor was the fact that he not only took over the Tiger's catching duties but was also their manager. He guided the Tigers to a 101-53 record, their first winning record in seven years and first pennant in 25 years.

From the bottom of the article: "In 1947, Williams was edged by Yankee Joe DiMaggio , who had captured the nation's attention with his 56 consecutive game hitting streak. DiMaggio's numbers were .305 BA, 21 HR, 114 RBI. The vote was 202-201." Williams' numbers were .343, 32HR, 114RBI.

(I'm pretty sure I remember this part correctly, it's been awhile since i read the story.) The writers ranked their top 10 candidates for MVP - a player received 10 votes if someone ranked him first, 9 for second, and so on down to 1 vote for being ranked 10th. Two writers disliked Williams enough that they didn't have him in the top 10 that year, and he lost by one vote.

A-Rod is a long shot to win the batting title this year. He's having a monster season but I don't see it happening. Hitters are so specialized now that it's really hard to lead the league in both power and average with guys like Ichiro out there.

Just my .02, I could be wrong.

Now leads both leagues in BA, RBIs and HRs.

Leads the cubs in BA, OBP, RBIs, hits, 2Bs, runs, SBs, HRs, SLG, BBs, and TB.

Oh.... and he hasnt been retired in his last 10 ABs.

Sammy who? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now... if only the cubs could get their ace and number 2 man healthy....

Sorry maybe I should post a couple hundred times a day like yourself.. and even create other names to annoy people on.

Anyways, if you wanted to make a bet, we could transfer $ to 3rd person over some poker site. One of these newly dubbed moderators or someone you find trustworthy.

Cubs,
This is looking better everyday, Lee is on quite the streak, Michael Barrett said of Lee's streak "I have played with some great players, but this streak is the most impressive I have ever seen" (from memory)... but the other posters are right, this happens every year, remember Helton a few years back, he took a bid past the all star break.

Maybe I'm missing something? I meant we both transfer $XXX to a third party right now.. they confirm they have the money. They give it to winner at end of season.

Lots of baseball left to be played i know... and he cant keep up this pace for very long. Which of the 3 stats would you think he is most vulnerable?

Jurollo
06-03-2005, 12:59 AM
I think he can keep up the HR pace, RBIs might suffer due to the lack of depth in the cubbies lineup and he has never been a good hitter for average (.272 career), I would assume he levels off around .330 (which would be a great jump anyway).
