It's more acceptable these days than it ever has been before.

Walk into your local casino. Look around at the people there. That's your answer.

True. That said, adamstewart is right - it's much more acceptable than it's ever been. People still (rightly) have a negative reaction to compulsion or addiction, but I think gambling as recreation is fairly accepted, at least in most places.

Gambling is looked down upon because some people lose all the money they have, sell everything they own and then lose that ass well. Casinos are similar to tobacco companies, they sell you a product that's not good for you and make millions, yet we allow it.

Talking mainly about the -ev games, not poker.

Poker is a negative sum game, and is therefore -EV for its players by definition. In a 10/20 game with 5 dollar 1/2 hourly rake, the average expectation is -10 dollars per player.

I would think that poker is more -EV than any other casino game for at least 80 percent of the people who play poker.

like alcohol, gambling has ruined many the life of those who couldn't practice it in moderation - the reaction of those folks is to then vigorously attack it if it played a role in damaging their lives.

I had a girl I dated who was a bit uptight about it - turns out her mother was asian and a helluva gambler - another one I dated had her grandpa blow his retirement in 6 mos. in WI casinos - so she wasn't cool with it either.

just the way life goes, I guess -

My whole family is full of gamblers, so I guess I'm lucky.

My brother used to goto a casino and win 10-20k at craps at times. But he picked the wrong game I guess because mom pays some of his bills lol.
