New PC coming within the week. It'll have Windows XP.

I hear lots of people talk about using internet browsers that aren't IE.

Which should I get, and why?

Get ready for a load of people coming to overhype Mozilla.

It really does not make much of a difference.

The two that seem to pop up most are Firefox and Mozilla.

Why Firefox? And what about extensions? Huh?

Well, the extensions do, and so does the thought that you're moving the world towards better web coding standards. Personally, Adblock and Tabbed Browsing I cannot browse without.

I guess it's overrated if you enjoy pop-ups...

I don't get pop-ups. Who actually still gets pop-ups?

There are plenty of popup blockers for IE (googlebar, etc).

I use both IE and Mozilla. I don't have anything against Mozilla, but it's a [censored] browser. My computer is auto-cleaned of everything so often that the holes in IE are irrelevant.

Everyone says Firefox but I vote for Opera.

The big drawback - not free. Check it out, it's considered the fastest, however that's measured, and the interface in my opinion is better than Firefox's. Opera does not have a bugmenot.com extension like Firefox, another minus, but you can just go to the website and use their collection of passwords.

raisins

Get Firefox, its free. (by the way its Mozilla Firefox, mozillia and firefox are the same thing...same product.)

One u download it...follow the advice in this page/post:

Make your Firefox MUCH FASTER (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=inet&Number=1479469&fp art=1&PHPSESSID=)

Itt will speed your firefox up much much faster, after doing this, using IE is way to slow for me. Not to mention firefox security measures are far better than IEs.

I use Avant Browser, good because its not vulnerable to all the crap out there that exploits the numerous security flaws in IE, has built in pop-up blocker that works better than any i've used in any other program, built in ad-blocker, tabbed windows.

not only should you get Firefox, but you should also get WinAmp, Trillian, AVG Virus Scan, Spybot S&D, Limewire, a bit torrent agent(azureus is what I use), and Soulseek.

Sorry, but Avant uses IE's renderer (last I checked) thus it's vulnerable to many of the same exploits.

Ok, so after doing this I ran Registry Mechanic and restarted my computer (both for seperate reasons). Now, I'm back in firefox, but I've lost all my bookmarks and quicklinks, and am pretty pissed off. What did I do?

yea i agree with istewart, firefox is overhyped.
That being said, i still use firefox as my main browser.
But you should still have IE on your comp, since some sites 'dislike' firefox.

I agree with this. Opera is faster than firefox, and the scrolling is much smoother. I've been using Opera for about 4 years now and it gets better. I think firfox is coming close to being my main browser though.

Extra security is great, and tabbled browsing is much more than enough reason to get Firefox all by itself. Try it, and it'll become a feature you quickly fall in love with and then realize you absolutely can't do without.

Firefox also loads pages much more quickly than Explorer does for me, too.

If you do go with Firefox, check out bugmenot extension & "highlight, drag & create google search in new tab" extensions-- my personal favs.

Tabs are great, IE thinks so too. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Why has no one yet mentioned Abe Vigoda Status (http://www.vesterman.com/FirefoxExtensions/AbeVigodaStatus) for Firefox. This is without a doubt the most important plugin you can have.

Also, get bugmenot, Adblock (with filterset g), farkit, and ieview.
