View Full Version : I thought it was a good play

1st hour of a MTT and I've done poorly, sitting on the cutoff with 1150 chips and the blinds 50/100, with 9s7s.
Everyone folds to me & I make it 300 to go and only the BB, with about 1800 chips calls.
I have not had the opportunity to steal in late position. I usually don't try until this level and it's close to the end of the 15 minutes.
Flop: Ts,6d,2s; I've flopped a gut-shot straight & four flush draw.
BB puts me all in. 850 to call for a shot at winning 1500 chips.
I have 9 spades and 3 more eights that could win it for me. 8 spades if he has a set. At best, I'm a 2.92:1 dog if he doesn't have a set but a pair of Ts or higher. If he has a pair of 6s or 2s, I've got 18 outs and only a 1.61:1 dog. Pot odds are 1.76:1.
I figured he would have checked a set, so I called. He didn't have a set, he had a pair of Ts, but I didn't make my straight or flush.
I think I made a good call.
Why? Because I'll only see 5 more hands before having to put up the 100 blind and there isn't enough time left in this level for two more orbits.

I agree with you, your call was fine. Preflop I dont know if I would be stealing though with 97s. You probably should have waited to atleast get an ace.

isn't that taking then, if you probably have the best hand it seems an awful lot like raising with the best hand. 97s is a fine steal hand, however you put yourself in a tough spot due to your stack size, stealing with a third of your stack can commit you to a flop that isn't even all that good.

I'd rather raise with 97s than with A2os...anyday.

I completely agree. middle suited connectors or 1 gappers are hands that are very good to steal with for many reasons.

How did you get best case 2.9 to 1? If he dosent have a set or a better flush draw you've got 12 outs for 1.2 to 1, making it an easy call.
I call here and hope he dosen't have a set, I would actually be worried more about a better flush draw possibly with a pair based on how the hand went down.

You have to call.
The alternative (folding) is to enter the next round with 850 chips when the average will be around 2000... not a good situation.
Good play.

you're correct. It is approx 1.2:1. I'm primarily a ring game player and was only considering the turn card.

I considered myself at the end of my rope and it was my last chance in LP to steal before I bleed more posting blinds. Plus, spades look like "fighting cards"

I actually like the whole line, you rased to get blinds, hoping you weren't called. After you got called you hit a great flop and lost basically a coin flip, with the blinds as they were you cant afford to wait for much better.
