I always had a fondness for this type of woodpecker. Never had seen one until yesterday. But then I had my doubts and double checked my bird book. Sure enough I had bagged a Red-naped sapsucker (http://www.birds.cornell.edu/programs/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Red-naped_Sapsucker_dtl.html) which interbreeds with other Sapsuckers.

The Red-naped Sapsucker I saw had brighter red about the thorat and head and a more yellowish belly than the one shown in the weblink. But it did have the distinct red nape. So it was not a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. I wonder how many different types of Sapsuckers Ray Zee has seen?

i dont know of any others in the u.s.

my favorite woodpecker is the pileated. we have a couple that nest on the property and stay most of the year. they do make big holes in any dying tree. its fun when the serviceberries are overripe and they get drunk from eating too many. they sway around in the bushes.
