I just was pulled into my headmaster's office and he asked me if I'd like to give an opening prayer at our graduation next week. I don't really like public speaking, but since it's under a minute for it, I decided I'd go with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for it? I'm instead of a minstral or something so I guess that some religious conitation would be good? I honestly have no idea what I should be doing. Any suggestions on the prayer?

It doesn't need to be very religious. I have never really paid attention to what a pastor or w/e says. I've only been to one so I don't really know. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good, short prayer.

Let us pray.

Father,

We have knowledge, so will You show us now,
How to use it wisely and find a way somehow
To make the world we live in a little better place,
And make life with its problems a little bit easier to face.
Grant us faith and courage and put purpose in our days,
And show us how to serve Thee in effective ways.
So our education, our knowledge and our skill
May find their true fulfillment as we learn to do Thy will.
And may we ever be aware in everything we do,
That knowledge comes from learning, and wisdom comes from You.

Amen.

Here's a poem I read aloud to an 8th grade class about 15 years ago:

Well there’s a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can’t wait for the night
I hate to think I’ve been blinded baby
Why can’t I see you tonight?

And the warmth of your smile starts a-burnin’
And the thrill of your touch gives me fright
And I’m shaking so much, really yearning
Why don’t you show up, make it all right?
Yeah, it’s all right.

And if you promised you’d love so completely
And you said you would always be true
You swore that you would never leave me, baby:
What ever happened to you?

And you thought it was only in movies
As you wish all your dreams would come true
It ain’t the first time believe me, baby
I’m standin here feeling blue
Yeah I’m blue

Now I will stand in the rain on the corner
I’ll watch the people go shuffling downtown
Another ten minutes no longer
And then I’m turning around

The clock on the wall’s moving slower
My heart it sinks to the ground
And the storm that I thought would blow over
Clouds the light of the love that I found

Now my body is starting to quiver
And the palms of my hands getting wet
I’ve got no reason to doubt you baby,
It’s all a terrible mess

I’ll run in the rain till I’m breathless
When I’m breathless I’ll run till I drop, hey
The thoughts of a fool’s kind of careless
I’m just a fool waiting on the wrong block, oh yeah
Light of the love that I found...

I got an A, and my teacher was an idiot. I actually took out a bunch of stanzas, but was too lazy to edit what I pasted.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies and establish Thy justice among men and nations.

Meh, myself and two other students are Jewish, but the rest of the school and teachers are not, so he asked me to keep it not any religion specifically.

Steve -
That would make me immensely happy. Please do it! I know people used to poke fun of you for it, but it was a good trademark phrase. I mean, look at peace john nickle. his sig has become his name on here.

So one vote from me that you add it back.

That's pretty close to what I did at my high school graduation many years ago. I was (by far) the top student in my very large class (one public high school for an industrial city of 100,000 people), but I was not permitted to be valedictoorian because I was female. However, I was allowed to give the benediction--which I basically didn't approve of because I don't think there should be any religious doings (no matter how non-sectarian) in a public school. But I did it anyway, those being far less litigious times. The prayer I used was the Shehecheanu (the best I can do for transliteration). For those unfamiliar with it, this prayer is recited on occasions when one has reached a goal. It essentially thanks God for allowing one to reach a particular day, be it a holiday or a personal milestone of some sort. Hence it was appropriate for the occasion. After I completed this very brief prayer, a loud voice was heard from the audience, saying, "Isn't her Latin beautiful...." Oh well........

Over the years I have become increasingly uncomfortable with the intrusion of prayer and other religious observances in public life. I stopped going to graduation which is (supposedly) a mandatory part of my job because I simply refused to bow my head reverently while some priest prayed in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the Chancellor crossed himself. If I go to a Catholic Church voluntarily because of a funeral or a wedding, then I sit respectfully through the service (I do not stand or kneel or participate in any way). But I will not sit through a sectarian prayer as part of my job in a state university. No one has ever said anything about my absence--because even though attendance is supposedly mandatory, a lot of the faculty just doesn't bother to go.

Not to belittle anyone's faith, but this thread is just too perfect for Ben Stiller's prayer in Meet the Parents:

[ QUOTE ]
Oh, dear god, thank you, you are such a good god to us. A kind and gentle and accommodating god, and we thank you oh sweet, sweet lord of hosts for the smorgasbord you have so aptly laid at our table this day, and each day, by day, day by day, by day oh dear lord three things we pray to love thee more dearly, to see thee more clearly, to follow thee more nearly, day, by day, by day. Amen.
