You need an uninterruptible power supply that shuts down your computer gracefully such as one by made by APC. It's not just a nice option; it's essential. I believe many more operating system glitches and hardware failures are caused by power supply problems and improper shutdown than most people realize. No I don't work for a UPS manufacturer, but I would never plug my computer into anything else.

i dont know brad, but when it happens to me my stuff doesnt change.
but as we will have many major outages in the future. a person needs to have a source of light for thier house that doesnt need electric. as well as a way to get water, although most water systems will still function. and heat if youlive in a cold climate. a wood stove or a propane stove(not a camp stove that burns up the o2 in the house) that doesnt need electric. i have both, as well as a heat pump at my place. i also keep a few coleman propane lights around and lots of candles. one or twice a year i am without power for a least the whole evening.
the average household also has only a three day supply of food. scary.
