I thought that poker was against the Statutes in Minnesota and the only reason Canterbury got special permission to open a card room was because the race track was losing money. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but that would mean that there had to be some special legislation for this to occur, anyone know more?

You are wrong /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Almost all the other Indian casinos have poker already and have for at least a year. NL is not allowed though per state legislation.

I'm going to guess that its because anybody with half a brain would drive 10 minutes down the road and play at the 'Bury. Seriously, Mystic would have to build a world-class poker room to take customers away from Canterbury, it just wouldn't be worth the money.

I was just curious because I could see them attracting more fish.

I think Canterbury is just far too established as THE Twin Cities area poker room. There's a reason they say Bury is "the only casino where the tourists are better than the locals". Huge pond, all the way up to the 30/60.

If Mistake Lake were to build a poker room, they might get a little traffic from people staying there and whatnot, but there is no way they'd ever take enough traffic from Canterbury - a very well run and, again, established cardroom - to make it worth it. The casinos like Shooting Star and Grand Hinckley that are starting poker rooms get traffic from the people that don't want to go all the way to Shakopee.

Come on. Canterbury frequently has three hour waits for low-limit games. You don't think a few people would go down the road to get into a game sooner? Other games are a more profitable use of floor space than poker rooms, and that's probably a bigger factor than Canterbury in why Mystic probably won't have poker any time soon.
