That was a wonderful article. As far north as you are, do you ever see any Western Scrub Jays?

I work at a college campus in California, and we have bunches of them. Nothing special about them I guess, but I have one that will fly right up to me, within a foot.

I feed them roasted, unsalted, unshelled peanuts and the occasional raw sunflower seeds. Hey, they are nuts for peanuts.

Anyway, this one bird has flown into the back of my head a few times (after I started feeding him). At first it freaked me out because I used to be afraid of/hate birds, but have changed my tune and become a bird lover.

I decided he/she was just trying to get my attention and it’s all good.

I’m thinking of trying to get him to take a peanut out of my hand as a sort of trust exercise. Bad idea?

Anyway, great article as usual. Thank you.

we have some gray jays and nutcrackers. there has been by me also an eastern bluejay sighting in my yard. up here some of the birds determine possible if the grizzly bear will survive. its very intertwined== nature that is.
