Pat, I'll start by giving the basics -- I lost $240 in my second 5-10 sit and had no very interesting hands. In 6 hours, I had sub-par cards -- only 4 prime opening hands (KK twice, totally live high AK flush once and AA once) and perhaps 8 or 10 other playable hands (JJ A with one jack dead, three flush with a king with two of suit dead, 88 Q). What's more, none of my prime starters won except the aces which took a small pot. I did, however, sit with CJ for a couple of hours which was very enjoyable. He was doing a bit better than I.

Bolstered by a bankroll from paradise 2-4 stud, I'm trying to learn 5-10. With antes and bring ins, it costs about $20-22/hour to sit, so I can attribute a part of my loss to simply having less opportunities to win small pots. Mostly I had hands that required no thinking -- they were just auto folds.

I did make one mistake, in part because of not playing for about a half hour. On the hand where I had (split) aces, I completed on third and was called by one player, who had a king in the door which he paired on fourth. He checked and I checked along. We checked down and I made a second pair on river to take the pot. I probably should have bet fifth when he checked again -- this guy was not tricky enough to check trips twice, but I had to put him on two pair, although it's possible he called with a draw. I certainly should have bet when I did make two pair on the river. I think I was just stunned to see aces instead of 4 9 J rainbow, then double stunned to see him pair his king in the door.

In general, I felt the players were not particularly strong. There was one good player in the game CJ and I were in (although CJ did not think as much of him as I did). I thought he did a very good job of changing gears, but he was also catching cards, which made some of his loose plays look like genius. At my other table, the best player was a woman whose husband was playing 75-150 stud nearby. She was having fun and enjoying beating a few grumpy old chauvinistic types.

I feel I have a good handle on 2-4 stud on paradise and the 1-3 game in the casino. I'd say I've still got some work to do on my 5-10 game though. I've set up a tough 5-10 line up on Turbo, and usually can't win there, either.

Needless to say, all advice is welcome.

MRB - good report, as I've posted, I'm just starting to get my feet wet at $5/10. You said the players were relatively weak - were they loose/tight passive/aggressive? I've still only sat the one time at this level over Thanksgiving and the game was entirely loose/passive. I find it difficult to adjust to a very loose game but that's a post for another time.

Dont' let one or two losses get you down. If you can get into the weekend night games, you'll prosper. If you're going to give yourself a genuine shot, go two or three more times. If you keep losing, reevaluate. . . but based on your starting hands and the fact that they're money winners that just didn't come through, it sounds like the cards were just against you that day.

MRB,
You played well. You should have no problem beating that game once you get comfortable with the limit.

The player that you mentioned 'as the other good player'.. He wasn't too bad, but the player that really caught my eye was the opponent to my immediate right. ( I can't believe he didn't pay me off on that hand I had the flush!!.. Oooo-ooh--ooh. If I had a few more cards against him I wouldof taken advantage of that )

Anywhoo..

It was great playin with ya.

At my other table, the best player was a woman whose husband was playing 75-150 stud nearby.

I remember her -- I think her name is Ruth. I think she's one of the better 5-10 players -- playing almost perfect Roy West strategy. She'll semi-bluff raise with a four-flush, and sometimes do the same with a big hidden pair and two suited cards on 4th -- just a little tricky.

She's also very pleasant to chat with, and delights (as do I) in busting up those mean old fogies!

I know the Ruth you are referring to, her husband Stanley is usually in the 75-150 game I play in, he is also a very solid player. Very funny with a real dry sense of humor, too.

I'm not discouraged, and will certainly be playing more 5-10 stud. As I say I've won enough playing 2-4 on Paradise to pay tuition for awhile. I would say this though: a player like Ruth is NOT +EV for me. Luckily most opponents are not like her -- give me a mean, grumpy loser over a nice, pleasant winner any day. 2-4 stud on paradise has spoiled me. Forget all the nonsense you read about online games being tougher -- there are plenty of good players in 2-4, but there are plenty more AWFUL ones, who play loose as a goose and aggressive with it. I really would like to walk in to FW or Mohegan at about 7 p.m. on Friday and leave around 1 a.m. to see if some of the same types were in attendance -- but that gets me home at 3 a.m. and means I'm laying in bed the next morning while my wife has to deal with the kids, so it's a -EV move on the home front!

You didn't mention how you thought the action at Foxwoods compared to Mohegan Sun (after investing the 15+ minutes extra on Pat's advice). I haven't played at Mohegan, but I spent a long weekend at Foxwoods. Just curious to know how you would compare the two (including how the room is run, list management, etc.).

I actually thought the games were pretty similar. Now that Mohegan has a hotel, and has expanded it's gaming and shopping, it gets lots of tourists. As far as room, Mohegan's is nicer in my mind for three reasons: it's an actual enclosed room; the dealers keep their individual tips; and the low limit games they offer are slightly more to my liking (3-6 hold-em vs. 2/4 or 4/8, 2-4 omaha vs. 5-10 being the lowest limit omaha at FW). However both are excellent rooms and I've had no complaints with management.
