Pat, I'll start by giving the basics -- I lost $240 in my second 5-10 sit and had no very interesting hands. In 6 hours, I had sub-par cards -- only 4 prime opening hands (KK twice, totally live high AK flush once and AA once) and perhaps 8 or 10 other playable hands (JJ A with one jack dead, three flush with a king with two of suit dead, 88 Q). What's more, none of my prime starters won except the aces which took a small pot. I did, however, sit with CJ for a couple of hours which was very enjoyable. He was doing a bit better than I.
Bolstered by a bankroll from paradise 2-4 stud, I'm trying to learn 5-10. With antes and bring ins, it costs about $20-22/hour to sit, so I can attribute a part of my loss to simply having less opportunities to win small pots. Mostly I had hands that required no thinking -- they were just auto folds.
I did make one mistake, in part because of not playing for about a half hour. On the hand where I had (split) aces, I completed on third and was called by one player, who had a king in the door which he paired on fourth. He checked and I checked along. We checked down and I made a second pair on river to take the pot. I probably should have bet fifth when he checked again -- this guy was not tricky enough to check trips twice, but I had to put him on two pair, although it's possible he called with a draw. I certainly should have bet when I did make two pair on the river. I think I was just stunned to see aces instead of 4 9 J rainbow, then double stunned to see him pair his king in the door.
In general, I felt the players were not particularly strong. There was one good player in the game CJ and I were in (although CJ did not think as much of him as I did). I thought he did a very good job of changing gears, but he was also catching cards, which made some of his loose plays look like genius. At my other table, the best player was a woman whose husband was playing 75-150 stud nearby. She was having fun and enjoying beating a few grumpy old chauvinistic types.
I feel I have a good handle on 2-4 stud on paradise and the 1-3 game in the casino. I'd say I've still got some work to do on my 5-10 game though. I've set up a tough 5-10 line up on Turbo, and usually can't win there, either.
Needless to say, all advice is welcome.
