I'm a new player and I have $1000. I was wondering which limit game is the best for me to play and whether I should play online or in B&M cardrooms.

thanx

300 big bets. 2/4 then, or 1/2 to be safe.

Get 200 more and play 2/4 is my recommendation.

Dont put it all in play at one time, bankroll it well, if you lose at 2/4 move to 1/2 until your bankroll goes back to $1200ish

It is not safe to play with 300 big bets unless you are a solid winner. A new player should not be assumed to be a solid winner, particularly not at $2-$4, which is much tougher online than it is in a live casino.

I wish people would stop repeating the 300 BB mantra out of context.

New player? To Poker Hold em? or new to forums ?

Have you...
Experienced bad beats, Worked bankroll back up.. etc etc? Know the game well, Read players... maybe read few decent books?

If not.... Id say save $850 and try .25/.50 Unless as said.. Your a good player.

a newbie with $1000 Bankroll would be BAD.

Infact, with 0 experience... Might be wise to play even lower limits.

I think you are saying you are new to poker.

If I was you I would deposit $50 into neteller and start playing the .02/.04 tables at PokerStars.

Buy the books
Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones
Internet Texas Holdem by Mathew Hilger
Getting Started in Holdem by Ed Miller
Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller

Read them in that order.

Buy Pokertracker to track your progress.

Read all you can on this forum

I think if you start out at higher limits just because you have the bankroll is not smart. Become a winning player at the lower limits and build your skills and confidence. Use your $1000 to buy the books and software above. These are the tools that will best put your money to good use. Your bankroll will thank you for it.

Agree, However i've only read ITH and started SSH.

I'd say ITH and SSH were the only books required for now, however having not read the others mentioned i cannot comment.

skip 0.02/0.04 and go to 0.05/.10 - Slightly better games, After reading ITH i dont think you'll lose, Just follow guidelines(Definatly follow starting hands or SSH Chart).

I went from 0.02/0.04 {Then Read ITH} to 0.05/.10 now i have a BR of $70 profit i have purchased SSH and will use its advice after having re/read it three times.

I started with a deposit of $20 which i later withdrew.

Agree with pokertracker, Id have brought this now if i had the cash.

Just my 2cents,
Good post Bubba.

As we say in the FAQ: "...if you are not a winning player, there is no bankroll large enough to keep you from ruin."

First, read Ed Miller's Getting Started In Hold'em while playing very low limits. I'd suggest a PokerStars account and play the .05/.10 games there.

If you can beat that game, consider moving up. However, keep in mind that the size of your bankroll will not keep you from eventual ruin if you are not beating the games.

I don't wanna beat a dead horse but I've been down your road before, although for not as much. DO NOT put your $1000 into ANY site without experience at this game. Like they said, start at the microlimits on PokerStars and grind your way up. I did that and should be starting .50/$1 next week or the week after(if I get the hands in and dont hit cold cards). Their advice works. Trust me. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

First of all, I want to say that the majority of the advice given in this thread is good and is well intended. There was only one poster who thought you should play 2/4 and most others chimed in that this is a bad idea; i mostly agree with this, but I want to give you an alternative.

So you have $1000 bank roll. My advice is to play .5/1. That way you will feel like you are playing poker with some risk (I'm assuming with $1000 br you can agree that playing .02/.04 will cause impalpable risk).

Here are my recommendations:

1. sign up at paradise first. deposit $200 using the granny mae code; pm that poster for instructions or read the classified ads (the link is on top left of page). you get $100 free in this case. it will take 1000-1500 hands of .5/1 to clear if I remember correctly.

The competition at paradise .5/1 is weak and even more passive than party/skins. (on party/skins you cannot run any one over since you are dealing with multiple calling stations, but on paradise you can on occasion).

to supplement your poker activites, you should read Lee Jones' WLLH and SSH (someone earlier in the thread gave a good reading list).

This way you should be at least playing break-even poker due to the bonus you receive. there is a lot of info in the microlimit forum and read that, play tight....

2. Next, sign up at party/skin and deposit $500 and you also get another $100 bonus here. i think it takes 500 hands to clear.

by playing tight and using these bonuses you should be able to play about ~3-5k hands of poker. at this point you will have enough experience for how to proceed after this point.

good luck.

Not trying to be a jerk b/c I know you mean well. But maybe this grand means nothing to him and is play money. If that's the case, playing 50 cent tables will not be very enjoyable at all. Nothing in his post implies this $1000 is the only money he can ever play poker with. I'd play 1-2 or 2-4. Just move down if you get beat up for 50 bets in one session. Make it worth your time. Post hands. Think about hands. Don't play loose. Work on your game. Be willing to move down if you get stuck hard. Just my opinion...I have more gamble in me than most. Only play what you feel comfortable with.

What is your decision as to what you're going to do?

Dave

PS: I'm still in process, playing at PokerStars at the 1/2 cents tables. I started with $50 there, and have spent $250 on books. Having played about 1,400 hands (without benefit of doing much reading from the books), I'm still losing money. Much of my lack of success is due to the exact strategy I'm using. Learning is much more important than winning to me, so I don't spend time in an optimum way. But now I'm mostly reading "Getting Started in Hold'em," which I heartily recommend for your first book!

Exactly! People still seem to miss this point about bankroll.

If you're comfortable losing the whole $1k in learning to play, go play at your local B&M or whatever you enjoy most. If you don't want to risk much until you know you're a winning player, play online microlimits until you can beat them, then go play $2/4 at your local casino (http://poker.wikicities.com/wiki/Casino) . (The level of play isn't much better than the microlimits.)
