Who the [censored] pays $45 for a haircut? I get a $12 haircut and give a $3 tip, which may be a little small, but when I give him a $20 and get $8 back, I just keep the $5 and give him the singles.

If you are paying $45 for a haircut and aren't some sort of entertainer or politician, you probably need to seriously re-examine your life.

I got a $55 haircut today and the tip was equal to what I usually pay for the haircut itself. I'd say you should tip about $10 though.

Enough to make your hair stylist remember you well. You want them to be happy to see you and really want to do a good job for you, because you're a hell of a good customer. That way you'll also get them willing to stay a little later to give you a cut sometimes, or put you ahead of some other customer if you're in a hurry. It pays.

I've tipped as much as the price of the haircut itself before, and believe me, they're glad to see you back and give you 100%. For a 40 or 45 buck haircut, a 20% tip at the very, very least. I'd tip at least $15. You don't want them to remember you tipped; that just classifies you as a non-jerk. You want them to remember you tipped really well.

$40 is reasonable for a haircut if you don't have a hairstyle that's as simple as trim the top and put a #3 fade on the sides. I'd tip $10-15.

my haircuts are 25 and i tip 10. would probably tip 5 if it wasnt a hot chick who cuts my hair though. my hair pretty easy to cut i could probably get a similiar cut at great clips but i would have a fat old lady washing my hair.

My cut and shampoo is usually around $25 no tax. So I leave about $5 or $10 tip depending on well the cut was and how friendly the stylist was that day.

I go to the same girl and have been for ~ 5 years. She's awesome. The cut is 20. I give her 25 and we are both very happy.

Blarg

Ouch, that is cheap.

The way I see it, the person who cuts your hair and your dentist are the type of people that you want to have think you're the greatest guy in the world. They can do too much damage and cause too much misery if they aren't happy and really into trying their very best.

I remember hearing somewhere that you don't tip barbers. ither that or you don't tip the barber who owns the shop. One of those, anyway. Even the former makes sense as most stylists are independent contractors who are taking a large portion of whatever they are charging and renting the chair that they are using.

I go to a good old fashioned barber shop. They have a pole and real magazines (not just cosmo, people and hair magazines) and crappy little signed pictures of celebrities that have gotten their haircut there and everything. It's a great place.

But the haircuts are $12. I take my son and we get it cut once a month. The problem is, it's always on a saturday morning and they only take cash. So I have to go to an ATM first and it gives me two $20 bills.

So I pay the $24 for our two haircuts and I feel like $6 is too little to tip. But they always hand me back a ten and four ones. This place is always really busy and it takes forever to give them back the ten and get change again so I can give them like $8 for a tip.

I could just give them the ten, but that seems like too much so I usually just give them the six and throw them the full ten once in awhile.

I bought a pair of $12 clippers two years ago. Now I slap on a #1 blade guide once a week, and keep cutting until I don't hear any more hair getting cut. Total cost per cut: a couple cents.

Being 40 has it's advantages. You're not going to look cool anyway, so don't bother trying and save yourself some $$$.

OtisTheMarsupial

Don't tip a percentage of the price.

Hairstylists either:
a) work for the man and must only charge you $12 when they deserve $50

or

b) set their own prices and thus earn most of the profit already

Thus, if you tip a percentage, you're either stiffing the stylist A or you're just increasing stylist B's prices.

Tip 5-10 bucks depending on how much you like it and the chances you'll be back.

Always tip on the higher end if it's the first time and you plan to return. You want to make an impression so they'll treat you well next time.

Tip the shampoo girl 2-5 bucks unless you stared at her clevage, then tip 10.

You're right. That used to be a rule. But now you just tip anyone who is in a profession where tipping is the norm. They count on it when they set their prices.
Besides, it's better to err on the side of tipping too much than the other way around.

Standard? Are you serious? I've had it done once. That was because I went to one of those Jiffy Cuts places (or whatever they're called. Some chain anyway...). There wasn't a "shampoo girl" though. It was just the girl that cut my hair.

She said she really liked my hair because it's so thick and soft and she wanted to wash it for free even (I think the place charged like $5 extra for a wash). I let her because she was fairly hot and of course I did overtip, which i'm sure was the object of the exercise for her.

My gut instinct is telling me 8 dollars. But a 50 dollar haircut is really expensive in my mind, or where I live at least. So I'd feel kind of pissed and not want to tip. But then they must be great so I'd feel I should tip alot. But I mean a 10 dollar tip, come on, I dont make that in an hour. So I am going to go down to 8.

I've never in my life tipped the barber. Maybe if I found a barber that was really good, then I would but I always end up hating my barber. Also, my haircut was never over $10 and why in god's name would a guy pay $30 - $50 for a haircut unless you live in LA or NY where everything is expensive as hell.

I've actually been told before that you don't tip the owner of the salon/shop. But I think that may be more of an older attitude, and you're just kinda supposed to tip everyone these days. I think a $15 tip on a $45 haircut is a little excessive. $10 is fine.
