If you're prone to motion sickness don't click, but for the rest of you:

Its not an animated gif. If you print it out on a piece of paper you see the same thing.

More from the same artist:

Pretty cool. Now, if you print this out, does it still give off that effect? Or is this caused by the refresh rate of our monitors?

pokerjo22

It works on paper too. Its to do with the contrast between the alternating bands on the snakes as well as our eyes scanning the image (if you hold your eyes perfectly still the rotating will stop). Nothing to do with refresh rates.

If you focus on a single spot and don't move your eyes, it stops "moving". Clearly whatever causes it has to do with eye movement or the brain's adjustment to eye movement.

That's one of the coolest optical illusions I've seen.

Good stuff although the second image didn't move for me and a couple others just had slight movement.

For those who haven't seen this before, this is interesting.

The squares marked A and B are the exact same color.

It's true. Use an image editor to copy/paste a square right next to the other one.

pokerjo22

or just cover the rest of the image with your hands like the rest of us.

OMG it so NOT the same color, you're all color blind. Seriously Square A is completely darker than B.

Exactly. Seriously I haven't gone as far as using an image editor but I have covered up everything but the 2 squares with post-its and A looks a tad darker to me.

At first I thought you were being asinine. It's exactly the same colour.

Check the RGB values in PSP and draw a line between the two using the dropper tool.

I'd do it myself but have no webspace.

I didn't know what to think either. Now, I don't know what to think about toss's response.

If it helps at all, when I first saw this optical illusion, I wouldn't believe it either. So, I copied the image into Paint and removed everything which surrounded the two squres. Of course, the two squares ended up being identical in color.

This might help.

But but but but its looks so not the same color. I guess the only way to convince myself is to photshop it and see....

Ja it's a cool one.

You seen that head you can make out of paper and its eyes follow you round the room? Can't remember if it's a lion or whatever.

If you've no idea what I'm talking about I can probably find the url, it's very cool.

I see it, but I'm still having a hard time believing it. Thanks for taking the time to prove it to me Dynasty.

It has to do with the squares around the one in the shadow being darker than the squares not in the shadow.

Pretty cool.

It's cool to see the square appear to change color when you select an area of B and drag it towards A.

I love getting that headache as my brain tries to comprehend what my eyes are seeing.

Wouldn't this make great wallpaper? Could you imagine being in a small room and every inch was covered with this design?

Some of the pictures on this website can cause dizziness or might possibly epileptic seizures. The latter happens when the brain can't handle the conflicting information from your two eyes. If you start feeling unwell when using this website, immediately cover one eye with your hand and then leave the page. Do not close your eyes because that can make the attack worse.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thought that should be included here.

Thanks for the illusions! They were very cool. The one at the bottom of the page is the only one that had anywhere near as strong an effect on me as the one you linked.

Just put the grey box one in paint and erase everything but the A and B boxes.
