View Full Version : How Much Is That Doggy in the Window?

I'm getting a dog soon from this (http://www.lafspetadoption.com/index5.htm) shelter. Help me pick it out.

If the dog's name isn't listed, that's because it didn't make the cut, for whatever reason. You can still write it in, I guess, but it won't really matter.

What are your criteria. Just curious. I'm guessing you avoided the dogs that you think of as aggressive (the pit and rott mixes)?

edit: I voted Sasha.

My girlfriend (lives with me) refuses to even entertain the idea of the pit/rottweilers. I've tried convincing her that they've gotten a bad rap, that any dog will be docile and well-behaved if properly cared for and trained, etc. Then there was a big story on the news about a rottweiler that maimed somebody or killed a kid or something, and the discussion was pretty much over.

Others didn't make the list because they'd likely be larger than I'm looking for.

How you aren't getting Nibbles or Ellen, I'll never know.

In your choices, I like Brownie, and Nightowl.

Tux must be too big, so I vote for Nightowl. Have fun with your new dog and make sure to post pictures of him/her when you get her home.

You need to do some work on your girl cause nibbles is a beautiful dog. With Sasha/Ellen tied for a very close 2nd.

Nibbles has character. Look at him so energetic for the camera.

Plus, he will guard and protect you.. Rip the [censored] out of anyone you hate.

If Nibbles is out of the question, it's either NIGHTOWL or Sasha.

NIGHTOWL thats such a MMORPG name.

Sasha's by far the cutest, but at 17 weeks old, she may have been in the shelter quite a bit during the optimum human socialization periods. Labradors and terriers can both be very active dogs, too, and as a mix of the two, I'm not sure if you'd want that or not.

I was going to pic Tux, but saw he wasn't on there, so I picked Yorkie instead. I love German shepherds, and she's only 8 weeks old, which is a plus. That's about the earliest you really want to get a puppy anyway. A shepherd is a big, active dog, so if you're going to be an owner worth a damn, you're going to have to give that dog plenty of chance to stretch its legs.

"Hello, my name is Suzette. I am an 14 week old (b.02-16-05) female pit bull terrier mix . I will be a medium/large dog weighing between 50-60 pounds full grown. "

That must have been a rough experience for the terrier.

I agree with the pittbulls and rottweilers can be good dogs too, blah blah blah theory, but I felt the need to inform you that Sasha is part pit, even if she is listed as Lab/terrier. It's funny how many people say that their pitt mutt is a lab or boxer mix.

Sometimes you can tell. Sometimes you can't. At the shelters they're always pretty much just guessing what the dog is anyway. I'd guess Miguel has some Chow in him, which some people might not want either. However, I think it's ridiculous that you think you can say for sure that Sasha is part Pit.

Anyway, I'm on the side that says there's something screwy in the make-up of a pitbull that makes unpredictable regardless of whether he's raised well or not. Yea, I know a lot of people that have never had any problem with them, and have really sweet pits. I also know a couple that had a really sweet pit that snapped one day and chewed half their kids face off. And i know another guy who had a sweet pit that he was sitting there sacratching its ears when it went berserk and practically tried to eat him.

I'm not saying they're all crazy, but there's always an uncertainty about them that I don't like. I personally wouldn't have one around my kids.

Lazymeatball
05-25-2005, 10:01 AM
The problem with the pitbulls, can they be raised right or do they all have the potential to snap debate, is that all people ever have is anecdotal evidence of this guy he know who has the sweetest pitbull who'd never hurt anyone, and the person who has a neighbor who had a perfectly friendly pitbull who out of the blue killed a bunch of orphans for no reason.

And looking at Sasha, judging by the build, the size of the feet, the tail, the shape of the head, and that pattern of a white stripe down the face and the patch on the chest, she looks like a pit mix. I don't think that's a ridiculous claim.

jakethebake
05-25-2005, 10:05 AM
I'm not saying that ALL pits have the potential to snap. I'm saying there's a gene or something that a lot of them seem to have. The problem is you can't tell which ones have it until they actually snap.

Sasha might or might not be a pit mix. I'm just saying you can't say for certain. A statement that Sasha "may" have some pit in him isn't ridiculous. But you just sound too certain to me, that's all I'm saying.

i know this has been said a million times, but it all depends on their upbringing. i've been around rottweilers and pit bulls who were complete softies, and probably wouldn't think of hurting you unless you kicked them in the face.

Clearly, Ellen should have made the cut. Its like not playing Jordan in high school! I mean, look at that face!
http://www.lafspetadoption.com/images/ellenbu.jpg

But, if we have to stick with the list, I'm voting for Brownie.

http://www.lafspetadoption.com/images/brownieu.jpg

Most of the sheps I've ever come across have been very smart, and I've also heard that females are easier to train. I have a female Lhasa Apso, and she was a piece of cake.
