Hey all, my father is involved in my former HS's football program. They came up with the idea to run a hold'em tournament as a fundraiser. He then turned to me for help. My question is what kind of clearance/permits the booster club would have to get from local government, etc? Also, if anyone on this board has run something similar in the past I'd love to hear any suggestions to make it run as smoothly as possible. Thanks. 'Stosh

i've run these before for a local battered women's shelter. each charity in my state is allowed to run casino nights 6 times per year. a permit is supposed to be acquired, but i've never bothered. i just make sure to invite some cops and a judge or two.

get a tourney director program with a clock et al. google for several options. get some flyers out to local games. get a website where they can pre-register. get good cards, decent chips, and dealer buttons. you may be able to borrow these, or just buy them and take the price out of the prize pool. do a 50/50 draw during tourney to raise more $$$. get with a local florist for cost prices on roses, and sell those there also for more $$$. don't do blackjack or craps...you could easily lose on those games in the short term. run cash games as well with a rake that people could play after busting out.

cheers!
