I used this term to a black guy without thinking. He didn't say anything - just wondering if he could have been offended or no big deal?

Yeah, hes probably offended. You should apologize and give him a small gift. Nothing ostentatious, just a bucket of fried chicken or a watermelon or something.

I've never met a black person in my life who was even remotely as ultra sensitive as a typical Real World type black housemate or other similar typical portrayals of oft offended black people in the media. I doubt he even noticed.

To this particular person, I think it was unappropriate. I'm not sure if he think offense or not but I assume most black people don't appreciate such a derogatory remark.

Well, it depends on the person.
My friend once called this black girl a "cherry picker" during a game of basketball... she went absolutely psycho.

a lot of different races have been enslaved at one time or another throughout history. it's all in the past.
