...and share it with the rest of us.

Mine is " LOCAL HERO "
1983, Scotland, Bill Fosythe, Director

Starring Burt Lancaster, Peter Riegert (Boone in "Animal House"), Dennis Laswon ("Star Wars"), Jenny Seagrove and Peter Capaldi

Perhaps my favorite film of all time and the movie I love more than any other. It's perfectly indescribable yet utterly magical. Funny, moving, and one of a kind. Check it out.

Yeah, the music in Local Hero is by Mark Knopfler...it was his first movie score. And it's also one of the reasons why the movie works so well.

"Six String Samurai"

In 1957, the Russians dropped the bomb. America was reduced to a post-nucular wasteland where the last bastion of freedom in the West was Lost Vegas, where Elvis reigned as King.

40 years later, Elvis is dead, and every two-bit, sword-swinging, guitar-pickin' wannabe is trying to get to Vegas to become the next King of Rock'n'Roll. Including Death himself, who bears an eerie resemblance to Slash and demands you bow down to the ways of Heavy Metal.

Fun movie. Very campy, but fun movie.

Bob reviews some of the movies he's seen mentioned in this thread

il postino - overrated in my opinion (and I'm a fan of Pablo Neruda). I thought it was okay but not spectacular.

Top Secret - That movie ROCKS!!

Last Starfighter - Saw this in the theater with my best friend when we were 12. We were the only ones in the theater. We thought it was terrible and decided instead to stand at the screen and make hand-shadows puppets. I have seen it since and still think it's terrible.

Trainspotting - Easily in my top 10 favorite films. Doesn't qualify as obscure imo.

Night on Earth - I like Jim Jarmusch. Enjoyable film. Mystery Train is good too although similar.

My Dinner with Andre - I liked it. It was referenced on the Daily Show the other day and I'm sure it was over the head of 90%+ of the viewing audience.

FailSafe - was done twice. It is not the same as Dr. Strangelove though.
The re-make with George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Richard Dreyfus, Harvey Keitel and Noah Wylie (among others) was done live on CBS a few years ago.
It occasionally re-runs on A&E and is absolutely CHILLING. It is nothing short of terrifc and I highly recommend it.
I've only seen parts of the original FailSafe though.

Run Lola run - I liked it. Not horribly obscure.

Strange Brew - This was one of my favorite movies when I was like 13. The storm-trooper hockey scene is kind of weird.

After the Sunset - One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. Even the sexy Salma Hayek couldn't save this one.

MicroBob
05-21-2005, 09:23 PM
Some obscure films I dig:

The aforementioned CBS re-make of FailSafe is a good one I think.

Clockwatchers - If this counts as obscure

My Life to Live (Vivre se Vie) - 1962 French Film by Jean-Luc goddard (who also did Breathless which does NOT count as obscure)

Blow-Up - 1968 Michelangelo Antonioni film. British. Not sure if this qualifies as obscure or not but it is certainly more obscure than some of the movies mentioned here.

Fandango - 1984 film starring a young Kevin Costner (who I otherwise dislike) and Judd Nelson that I am partial to.

it really doesn't mean much as most of my papers were total garbage.
It basically just means that I watched a lot of foreign films and then argued about the supposed quality or meaning of those films with various profs.

They were actually some of the very best instructors I had at Miami (Ohio) University.

Blow Up is really a terrific movie.
Any movie that ends with mimes playing tennis is a winner in my book.

Anyone who has seen Austin Powers saw a couple of Blow Up references/parodies without even realizing it probably.
In the closing-credits when Austin is doing a photo-shoot with Liz Hurley....that is a direct parody of the opening scene of Blow Up.

Munich,1918: In a world reeling from World War One and the shock of the new, everyone's mind is on the future. It is a time of high-octane debate and dreams of drastic change, a time when the lines between art, politics and personal beliefs have been blurred beyond reckoning. The only question that remains is this: now what? In what direction will things turn next? For Max Rothman (JOHN CUSACK), a soldier just returned from the Great War, the present has certainly turned out radically different from what he imagined. He returned from the war, one of the walking wounded, a damaged man trying to sort out his life. Once a promising artist, he lost his right arm and with it, his ability to paint. Yet the future still draws Max like a magnet, fueled by the restlessness, typified by the birth of modernism. Now, he opens up what quickly becomes an acclaimed art gallery. Also caught in the Post-War struggle are his beautiful wife (MOLLY PARKER) and children, a once picturesque family, now torn by uncertainty and Max's infatuation with his alluring artistic mistress (LEELEE SOBIESKI). But then, at a celebratory party for the opening of his new show, Max meets another man interested in the future: a fellow war veteran and aspiring painter, a man with no family, no home and no friends. His name: Adolf Hitler (NOAH TAYLOR), and his decision to transfer his creative talents to politics, where at last he finds an outlet for his raw beliefs, sets into motion the most catastrophic period of the 20th century. MAX is more historical fable than straight-ahead historical drama -- a tale that careens through art, politics, love, hope, intolerance, obsession and destructive malevolence to provide an original and intimate portrait of a major turning point in modern history.
Genres: Drama
Running Time: 1 hr. 49 min.
Release Date: December 27, 2002 NY/LA.
MPAA Rating: R for language.
Distributor: Lions Gate Films

Here's one of the customer reviews.

In Overnight, Troy Duffy shows how not to make a movie. A bartender from Boston, Troy writes a movie script (Boondock Saints) and somehow lands a deal with Miramax to make the film, then he loses the deal, gets a record deal with Atlantic, loses it, then gets a deal to make Boondock Saints with another company and signs his band with another record company. In the middle of this rollercoaster ride of a movie/life/documentary, we find no shortage of drinking and smoking. And then there's Troy's way of dealing with people. Troy curses at people in the film industry on the phone. Troy badmouths his brother while driving in a car with his mother. He swears at bandmembers, telling them to shut the F up and just do their job. Is there anyone Troy doesn't hate? See Overnight to get an insight into the mind of a non-genius; a big fish in a small pond who is sure that the world owes him something, and that everyone who has ever wronged him in the past will live to regret it. And see it for the numerous A-list celebrities who show up to meet Troy early in the documentary, during the brief period when everyone thought he would be Hollywood's next great director.

Depends on what you mean by obscure, but none of my friends had heard of these until I recommended them:

1. Citizen Ruth -- An abortion comedy (yes, a comedy) starring Laura Dern. With Burt Reynolds in a great supporting role.

2. Defending Your Life -- After you die, you go to a weird Pleasantville-type purgatory where you go on "trial" to see if you have learned enough in your Earth life to move on in the universe. A comedy with Albert Brooks. Tough to explain, but I loved it.

3. Barcelona -- Probably not obscure enough, but I really enjoyed this story about an American salesman in Spain.

4. Kicking and Screaming -- Not the new Will Ferrell movie, but one that came out in the mid-90s about a group of guys who graduate from college, but don't want to leave. I probably wouldn't like this as much now, but when I saw it, I was in college, and didn't want to leave.

Yeah...this movie was like the anti Dinner With Andre...on paper it seemed like one of those slightly different movies I'd very much like....except, well, it sucked, /images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Beautiful and the cinematography was good I guess so visually I was impressed (but it wasn't really better visually than many other movies I've seen employing a large dose of natural surroundings)....but the depth and/or insight and/or thought provocation wasn't there...

Of course, going into a movie attempting to embody budhism and demanding insight and/or depth is sort of well....not necessarily in the spirit of the work.

Meh.....it wasn't even close to 'contemplative'....and since I contemplate just about everything....that was pretty weak to me.

Maybe it caught me on a bad day though....meh.

Some great flicks listed in this thread, especially 'Let it Ride'.

If you like Westerns, however, try........

...."Valdez is Coming"....

Classic lone good-guy vs. the 'bad guys' with Burt Lancaster in his prime as Bob Valdez, a half-breed Mexican sheriff. An ex-Apache-hunting army scout/sharpshooter who uses all his skills in a one-man vendetta against a wealthy cattle-baron/landowner.

Great job by Lancaster of underplaying the role, with a very realistic story line.

I think Pi definitely qualifies.
It's a top 10 favorite film for me and I really should have included it in my first post in this thread.

Requiem for a Dream (2005 mentioned) probably does not qualify though imo.

Suicide Kings shouldn't qualify. I saw parts of this YET AGAIN on basic-cable (I think FX) just a couple weeks ago.
I also don't think it's THAT good but nothing else was on.

sfer - I remember you mentioned the 13 convo's movie to me before and I have been meaning to track this down but haven't gotten around to it.

I only know a couple people who are familiar with it.

It's more obscure than Trainspotting for example (which i agree doesn't qualify as obscure).

I'll take your word for it that it got so much pub.

What about the documentary The Big Bang?
Basically just a bunch of interviews with various people on their thoughts about life.

I had wanted to see it for awhile and finally ran across it one night back when I had 8-zillion HBO's and cinemax's.

I thought Big Bang was really terrific.

Haven't seen The Big Bang. I've been putting the occasional documentary in my Netflix queue these days, too. I put one on Bob Dylan, one on The Clash, and one on Akira Kurosawa.

I was saying that about Pi because it was kind of a phenomenon of sorts when it came out. It got some big coverage, and still is a cult favorite, and isn't too old. It's in my queue; haven't seen it yet.

I'm a big fan of Trainspotting I love, but again, not obscure at all. Which is a cool thing. Some very funny reviews on the net about that film, from the bible-thumpers.

Here's one that I guess would be considered obscure now, but was extremely popular when it came out, and its director became really loved for this one especially, and a few more. For a true film buff, it's not terribly obscure, but for your average guy, much less your average young 2+2 poster, it's probably unknown.

Trouble In Mind, starring Kris Kristofferson.

"Seven Days in May"

Fredric March plays the role of the U.S. president, who has reached a low in his popularity, but manages to get a nuclear disarmament treaty through the Senate. Burt Lancaster stars as a popular member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his mad obsession with, and fear of a Soviet nuclear attack finally turns him against the president and leads him to a plot to overthrow the government. Kirk Douglas also stars as a lower ranking officer who learns of the plot and must find a way to try and dismantle the scheme.

It's an old black and white movie (1964), but it's a very well made drama.

Not yet. I saw the old one, though. I'll go see what the new one looks like.

I freaking hate Richard Dreyfus in EVERYTHING he does but he is really terrific as the President in Fail safe.
George Clooney is good too.

And I thought Noah Wylie really nailed the "oh my god" factor as the translator when Dreyfus presents his chilling plan. His reaction is the part that really got me.

Blarg - I suspect you would probably enjoy the Big Bang

Blarg
05-25-2005, 07:06 AM
I'm definitely not a Dreyfuss fan, although I thought he was good enough way back when, in American Graffiti, and I was surprised I was even able to stand him in The Goodbye Girl. Now he kind of gives me the creeps, though.

I searched for the Fail Safe you're talking about on Netflix, and only turned up the old one.

I'll see what that Big Bang thing is about. I've seriously got over 400 in my queue, though, so it's going to be ages till I can see most things.

I did remember to put in my queue a fun horror film that's not super obscure to film nuts, but is probably not known to all that many OOT'ers -- Warlock. It had some pretty crappy sequels, but I remember being very pleasantly surprised by the first one when I first saw it. The main actor is quite good, and there's a genuine vicious creepiness about him even though he has a certain jolliness about his evil that makes you actually kind of like the guy. There's at least one scene there that I've always remembered, when the warlock seeks out the fat of an unbaptised child to make his flying potion, that's really creepy and funny at the same time.

I like all the Jim Jarmusch stuff but I like "Stranger than Paradise" best. There is one scene where they stay at the Hungarian aunt's house and she plays cards with them. Auntie is winning every hand and you always hear "I am ze winnar!" from her. Cracks me up everytime.

Blow Up is a great film which I saw the first time when I was 12 or so. I had trouble following the plot but there were many nekkid scenes so I liked it. Saw that one 20 years later and yeah, it's great!

Kentucky Fried Movie is the film I laughed most about in my life. It is quite known over here and they are still showing it in program cinemas. Unfortunatly, there seems to be only one copy for all those cinemas and the film is getting shorter every year.

Stranger Than Paradise is great. It was absolutely huge in its time and for a very long time after. A very much loved film.

I loved many parts of Down by Law, too. It didn't work as well, but man, so many parts of it worked soooo well. It even enabled me to stand that Italian comedian, whose name I forget now, who did that "Life is Beautiful" film.

I've really gotta rent those two and see them again.

Kentucky Fried Movie was a gut buster. Not all of it was good, but that was another one where it's hard to imagine now that some people don't know it. It was a monster hit when it first came out, and everyone I knew saw it about as many times as they could take without blowing their brains out. I laughed my ass off at that one, and so did everyone I knew. Great fun.

It's funny, by now, you go back to some of those comedies and they probably don't seem so outrageous or original, and it's almost like you have to train yourself to see them clearly. But it's cool to see the sources of the type of comedy everyone's been feeding off for decades.

Meet The Feebles (1989)

Directed by Peter Jackson(The Lord of The Rings guy)

Plot
Heidi The Hippo, the star of the Meet The Feebles Variety Hour discovers her husband Bletch, The Walrus is cheating and with all the world waiting for the show the assorted co-stars must contend with their own problems. These include drug abuse, extortion, robbery, AIDS and even murder. While this is happening the love between two of the stars is threatened by the devious Trevor the Rat, who wishes to exploit the young starlet.
************************************************** **********

Basically Peter Jackson made a parody of "The Muppets Show". It's about a bunch of animal puppets (or people in animal costumes) putting on a show where everything goes wrong. Half of the puppets are strung out on drugs; some are doing porno videos in the basement; the rabbit is basically getting it on with everybody (and gets a potentially fatal disease); a walrus is going at it with a cat (this is shown) and a psychotic hippo gets hold of a machine gun....

As you can see this is NOT for the kiddies. What it is is an all out, no holds barred assault on good taste. Jackson and his crew show puppets vomiting, having sex, being graphically killed or sexually assaulted. If you have a weak stomach this is NOT for you. However if you have a REAL sick sense of humor and can take VERY graphic material (like me) you'll have a ball! I was actually laughing myself silly during this. The movie keeps topping itself with the humor getting more sick and graphic until the final massacre sequence at the end. Hard to believe this guy went on to do "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

NOT FOR EVERYBODY but damn I had so much FUN watching it!!!!

It is incredibly sad, but it's also gut-bustingly funny. I love movies that can combine the two; the ability to do that is very, very rare. This is one that won't age a day.

I cried too, btw. Every time I see it.

That film and Grave of the Fireflies are the films I guess I think are the saddest. Grave is probably a little harder to watch, but not in the same way, because there seems so little to redeem the sadness in it, unlike the humor and good people you see in My Life as a Dog.
