View Full Version : Best song in a movie moment...

What is the best song used at a specific point in a movie?

For instance, I'm watching Goodfellas and the Cream song "Sunshine of my Love" (i think thats the title) is really freaking sick. The opening chords start blaring as Deniro stares down the camera as he's deciding to wack all the people from the heist...

I am sure this isn't even close to the best one, but I love when a really good song comes on in a movie giving the goosebump effect.

Freebird guitar solo in Forrest Gump when Jenny is going to jump off the building. Serious, the most intense solo at an intense moment.

This sounds corny, but I really liked when Zefram Cochrane blasts Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride in the launch scene of Star Trek: First Contact.

No, I'm not a trekkie. I just thought it was an extremely well placed song.

The ones that popped immediately into my head:

1. "I'm siiiiiiiiiinging in the rain, just siiiiiiiiiiinging in the rain, what a glorious feeeeeeeeling I'm haaaaaaaaaaappy again...."

2. The kids dancing around the library in "Breakfast Club".

3. The helicopter ride in "Predator" ("...baaaaaaby, we're gonna have some fun tonight...")

4. Another ResDogs scene: the song being played while Pink, White, and Blonde are beating on the cop ("now give it here! You never should've promised to me, give it here! Don't hold back nothin, give it here..." and the horn section starts ominously low, quickly revving to frantic. Perfect for that scene.)

5. The Dante opera scene from "Hannibal". I stayed for the closing credits, just to hear it again. I never heard anything like it before. I hummed it for a month. Oh yeah, it has to fit the movie: It's certainly beautiful, and almost dainty and fragile--the way Lectar sees Clarice, the girl everyone else sees as a hardened killer.

6. More Tarentino, of course: Zam Fir's flute when Uma gets her sword in Okinawa (reprised when the closing credits start in Vol I). Half a dozen songs can be nominated from this film alone, but that was my fav.

7. More helicopters: Wagner in "Apocolypse Now"

8. Not a movie, but there was an episode of NYPD Blue where Andy and Bobby were sitting in a car on a stakeout. Bobby was digging "My Sharona" on the radio. Andy sat down, and griped about the music, so Bobby invited him to change it. Andy finds "Duke of Earl". Bobby laughs. "Always has to be oldies, huh Andy?" Bobby starts singing with the song. He's obviously in a great mood. Andy snorts, "What, did you get laid last night?" Bobby gives him a raised eyebrow, and keeps singing. That's a "yes". Andy, realizing that HE also got laid last night, joins in, and together they sing a few lines of "Duke of Earl", before another cop car pulls up and asks, "What the hell are you guys doing?"

It was THE moment that the new partners really forged their partnership, and their friendship.

Nice calls on Where is My Mind? (Fight Club) and Stuck in the Middle With You (Reservoir Dogs).

A few more (first 3 from Lynch):

In Dreams--Blue Velvet, when they're beating the hell out of Jeffrey, and the girl is dancing (really badly) on top of the car. This is a bad situation. It's used pretty well at Ben's place, too, when Ben (Dean Stockwell) "sings" it.

Rammstein--Lost Highway, when Bill Pullman is staggering down the hall of the hotel. This is a scary place.

Crying--Mulholland Drive, sung in Spanish, but not really sung at all. Mysterious, our emotions.

Tequila--Pee Wee's Big Adventure, when he dances on the bar as his last request before the bikers kill him. Pee Wee got a seriously bad deal. If I made movies, I'd cast him.

Pledging My Love (by Johnny Ace)--Bad Lieutenant, especially the scene where Keitel's character has really lost it, and he's all drunk and high and naked at his safe house, weeping, doing an odd marionette dance across the floor.

The End--Apocalypse Now, especially the part where Willard kills Kurtz. It's perfect, especially with the ritual slaughter of the caribou.

Save Me--Magnolia, at the very end. John Reilly's character is talking to the woman, the song is playing, and he's trying to express himself, and she's resisting, and then he finally gets through to her and she cracks a tiny smile and the chorus kicks in and the movie's over.

This last one is probably my favorite.

There's a song in Team America during the scene where they're having cocktails. Right before the sex scene, right after where Kim Jung Il declares himself the head of the terrorists (while killing Hrans Brix lol). Does anyone know the song? It has the line "close your eyes girl" and it seems that it's in every movie at a point like this. It's a great song and I'm wondering it anyone knows what it is.

No votes for Sigur Ros' Staralfur in The Life Aquatic? The song makes that moment.

Anyway, Wes Anderson has very good soundtrack selection. Nico's These Days when Margot gets off the bus in The Royal Tenenbaums is another example.

I'm going to be difficult and disagree.

1) It is too obvious.
2) The ending of Fight Club (when the first chords strike) is not remotely close to the coolest part of the movie. You know what is coming and there is little "goosebump" effect.
3) I've heard the song WAY too much since the movie came out. When I first saw the ending I thought, "Oh sweet..." but now, the song is played in practically every bar with a jukebox.

I'm convinced someone could think of something better!

1) Jesus rolling a strile and subsequently doing his dance while the Gypsy Kings version of Hotel California plays - The Big Lebowski

2) The end of the Big Lebowski with Townes Van Zant's version of Dead Flowers

3) Office Space - Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta - Ghetto Boys

4) If were going Goodgfellas I have to go with the scene where Henry is out riding around with the Helicopter chasing him and Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters is playing.

5) High Fidelity - John Cusack is sitting in the rain thinking about his ex-GF...Most Of Time by Dylan.

There are a ton of good ones. The first one that jumped into my mind was Coldplay "The Scientist" near the end of The garden State. A perfect moment for that song.

Rammstein--Lost Highway, when Bill Pullman is staggering down the hall of the hotel. This is a scary place.

Good one, the first time I saw LH I had to play that scene over a couple times, It was strangely compelling.

OOH. I just thought of a great one.

"We'll Meet Again" at the end of Dr. Strangelove.

How did I not think of this? Good one.

I also want to mention the end of Heat again: Pacino is holding Deniro's hand as Deniro dies. The music is perfect.

Also the opening credits of 25th hour, with the shots of the spotlights at ground zero.

In High Fidelity, when John Cusack has just been dumped by his girlfriend and Jack Black plays "Walking on sunshine". That totally cracked me up

A lot of great choices here. One of my favorites has always been "Under Pressure" in Grosse Pointe Blanke when John Cusack is face to face with the baby and has his epiphany (just prior to him killing another assassin at the High School reunion while "99 Luftballons" is playing).

"The Big Chill"

You Can't Always Get What You Want; during the opening funeral scenes.

Trivia: Who was cast as the dead friend, but never shown in flashbacks that the director didn't put in the final film.
( His body was still shown being prepped for the funeral )

Save Me--Magnolia, at the very end. John Reilly's character is talking to the woman, the song is playing, and he's trying to express himself, and she's resisting, and then he finally gets through to her and she cracks a tiny smile and the chorus kicks in and the movie's over.

This last one is probably my favorite.

This is great. I also like the part between "act 2" and "act 3" (forget the real names) when everyone sings "wise up." It's really kind of wonderful, like nothing we've ever seen before in movies...

Exactly, and great also on its own merits, not just for the novelty of never having been done before.

I'm glad someone else caught the final scene reference, because I think if you zoned out for the last ten seconds of the movie, you'd be missing a huge part of the point.
