View Full Version : I dreamed I was a professional poker player.

I have plenty of times played poker for money, and plenty of times made money playing poker. And of those times, I sometimes had no other source of income:-(

But the difference in this dream, right before I woke up this morning, was that I had neither ambition nor care in the world, and just kicked around Vegas!

Seriously, Dynasty was there - very friendly - and he showed me from casino to casino like we were bar-hopping. I got up at noon, and just started making rounds.

The main difference, between this dream and my actual experience playing poker, is that my real-life poker has been serious, solitary work, like commuting.

But in my dream, it was just the fun of hanging out with other people like me every day, and waiting for random fish to come along and subsidize our existence.

I had no place to be, and nothing but fun anticipation of drinking beers with Daniel Negreanu, and lying in the sun and screwing cocktail waitresses, time stood still.

My only conscious worry, that nagged at me, was keeping track of all the bills and denominations distributed across my various pockets and other locations.

A lot of people note how poker necessary involves a lot of luck, so that the difference between a happy pro and a miserable failure who has the same skill, may simply be God allocating good and bad runs.

I would argue that, rather than being unique to poker, this luck aspect is more prevalent in life itself. Where and whether you are born, whom you meet, what opportunities and lessons and inspirations come your way, and whether or not a piano falls on your head, are all much less reflective of any innate merit than poker.

Compared to life on Earth, poker is the anti-luck. The main difference, is that in poker the good things that don't happen to you can easily be measured, whereas in life they happen hidden away from you in other people's lives. These other people are no more aware of their good fortune than you are of your mediocre lot.

eLROY,

Why are you so much better on these other forums than you are(/were) on the Other Topics forum? I'm really a bit baffled. This post and the eBay (or was it Google) analysis you did a while back on the Stock Market forum show some real insight. So I take back half of whatever I previously said or thought about you, and another 25% based on your trippy fantastic fantasy sort of sense of exploratory humor. Not bad at all.

This post of yours also is worth remembering for me personally (because I often get feeling ground down by the long poker grind and the beats and I don't always want to put in the hours I know I need to...so it may help me to keep it in perspective a bit better when I feel like taking every other week off. Ray can no doubt afford to take every other week (or more) off, but I really can't (although I've somehow managed to do just about exactly that over the last 30 months, in sum). So thanks for the new perspective.

If you're dreaming about Dynasty, you're spending way too much time on 2+2 /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Much better to dream of B'Etor (but not Lursa).

Agreed. Love B'Etor.

Biggest mistake the Trek folks ever made was to kill them off. Great villains.
