i sick of playing a cd for 3 songs. I want more albums were you can just pop a disc in and let it play through to completion. Not really looking for obscure groups though. maybe i'll list some that i have in a bit.

Sadly, not OK Computer, because, you know.

Excluding the tons of classic rock albums, I'd say

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Tool - Lateralus

GFunk911
05-20-2005, 11:54 AM
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (that's Eric Clapton).
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets (semi obscure, sorry).
Any of the Stones first 6 or 7 albums if you like the Stones and don't mind a country-sorta-sounding-sound.
Radiohead - Pablo Honey
Beatles - Revolver
Most incubus albums if you're into that sort of thing, especially the most recent one (A crow left of the murder)

MEbenhoe
05-20-2005, 11:54 AM
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way (can't believe someone said Californication, good album overall but there are 2 or 3 just awful songs on that CD)
Scorpions - Love at First Sting
Green Day - Dookie, Nimrod, American Idiot
Incubus - Morning View

thats what I could think of off the top of my head, definitely plenty more options though.

Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon.. in facr you can't NOT listen to the entire album.. it is one of CD's that only works when you listen to the whole thing in its entirety

Another classic is RHCP Blood Sugar Sex Magic .. not a bad song on that cd despite the fact commercial radio over played under the bridge

I've tried to make this list quite a few times. It's a hard one, IMO. I usually find one crappy track on every disc. All I could really defend in a debate would be:

Cars 1st album
Zeppelin I
Weezer Blue Album
Slayer Reign in Blood
Shellac At Action Park

I can't believe there is someone on OOT that has a problem with this. Oh well, I said it because it's not worth $100 or whatever for only about 7 really new songs that are worth a damn.

like i said, i've downloaded and shared enough music files to put me up against any 12 or 14 year old those corporate dicks have gone after.

that said, the thread is first off about records you can listen all the way through without skipping...that voids your post right there if you're only talking about the 7 new songs.

i just thought you saying how great a box set was but that you should just go get the thing off of kazaa was weak that's all. i'm not looking for a flame war...or to support c.l.'s drug habbit...i have my own to worry about. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

First two that come to mind:

The Document - Andy Smith
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden

Also,
Wet From Birth - The Faint
although I have to be in the right mood not to skip "Drop Kick the Punks"

I agree its hard to find albums that don't have at least one or two bummers on them. Especially hip hop - it seems like there's a rule that every hip hop album has to have a track or two that not only sucks but is downright embarassing.

same here.

also i don't really understand when people ask for music recommendations but then say "not obscure stuff though." i see comments about that a lot on these forums - what do people have against "obscure" bands ? "obscure" isn't a genre. seriously, if it's good, it's good. i like a lot of music that would be considered "obscure" to someone who only listened to mainstream music, yet ESSENTIAL to anyone who has good taste. you will end up missing out on a lot of great music if you limit yourself to only well known stuff.

it's all relative anyway. most "mainstream" music is "obscure" to me.

look at the white stripes for example, they were "obscure" 8 years ago when their 'let's shake hands' single was released - and even up to de stijl in 2000. now, everyone knows them. which is a great thing because they're amazing! but does that mean their self titled album in 1999 and de stijl are worthless because they weren't on mtv yet ?

i know my music collection would suck if i limited myself like that.

then again, it is difficult to give recommendations without knowing what type of stuff someone likes. "radio music" doesn't mean enough to help me.

anyway, easy recommendation that made it through your filter without much thought: every white stripes album.
also most every ramones album.

Wow, this is treading in dangerous territory as far as recommendations go. Both have extremely "out there" vocals, which is definitely a love/hate extreme thing. The Ramones more so than White Stripes.

I'd recommend Massive Attack - Mezzanine, but that's pretty much just the flavour of this week. Next week I'd say something else.

Ah. Total misunderstanding then. My apologies.

I'm nothing more than a casual listener of The Ramones so I find it a bit hard to see the influences on Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Elaboration on that would be interesting.

Just to clarify, I think The Ramones's style is just such that many people would have a hard time getting into it as opposed to every other band you mentioned above. You're either gonna love or hate the vocals after hearing it for the first time, so I guess it's not a bad recommendation, I just feel like it's hit/miss ratio would be lower than a lot of other bands. Worth a listen to see if you like it though.

pearl jam introduced me to the ramones actually.. i was probably in 7th grade. (1992ish?) jeff ament was wearing a ramones t-shirt in one of their videos or something.

anyway, quote from http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/12037897

[ QUOTE ]
(3/19/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder inducted the Ramones into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame during Monday night's (March 18) ceremonies in New York. Vedder made a rambling 17-minute speech about the group's groundbreaking sound, their immense influence, and how underappreciated they were during their 20-plus years in existence.

Sporting a fresh mohawk, Vedder told the crowd, "When punk finally broke in '91, the Ramones still weren't brought along for the ride, even though Nirvana, Rancid, (and) Green Day wouldn't have existed without them."

Vedder said that he is also someone who is indebted to the group. "You know, punk bands now sell with one record--their first or second record--sell 10 times the amount of records that the Ramones did throughout their career with 20-something records. That's why I go over to Johnny Ramone's house and do yard work three times a week, just to absolve some of the guilt."
Vedder continued, "And a bunch of people do it, like (U2's) Bono and Edge do the windows. Kirk Hammett, the guitar player from Metallica, he dusts, house cleans, makes French toast. That's a true story," he said with a laugh.

[/ QUOTE ]

i'm sure a couple google searches can help elaborate further.

Perhaps my point was missed (though I doubt it)...

On the whole, people who like obscure music are far more likely to say things like (or have an attitude implying) "If you cant appreciate (Band X) you shouldnt be listening to music"

That is the answer to the question you posed

no, i got your point. i just thought it was dumb.

first of all, the ramones are far from obscure.

second of all "people who like obscure music" is a stupid generalization. what does that even mean ? what if i like all music ? more importantly, why would you want music advice from someone who only listens to what you already know ?

my first post is simply saying "obscure" isn't a genre, and means little on whether or not something is "good." there is a lot of crappy "obscure" bands, but there is just as many crappy "mainstream" bands. just because something is played on the radio doesn't make it good, and just because it isn't doesn't make it bad. that's all.

also, i don't really care what people listen to. and something doesn't have to be "obscure" for me to like it. obviously i don't expect my mom to think the ramones are awesome, and have no problem with her listening to country if that's what she likes. same with you. but what fun is talking about music if you are going to be indifferent to everything ? "the ramones are great. some might like them. some might not." yeah that discussion is going to be interesting.

my point with that second comment you quoted is that the ramones are a great band, and i was pretty shocked when someone said they were "treading on dangerous territory" (and yet can respect the poster who said this more than you) compared to everything else in this thread. of course i'm going to show off some 'tude to defend the ramones. c'mon. i was simply amusing myself because i'm so funny and cool.

except when i have to explain myself i get boring and lame. thanks a lot!

Though I agree with most of your points/taste, I do see his on the idea that music can be classified as obscure.

Obscure music is one of those terms that is tough to explicitly define, but, you can generally spot it when you see it.

It could be where you hear it, ie:

MTV -> Radio -> Rolling Stone -> Spin -> Pitchfork is somehwat of a continuum of obscurity.

Or simply the % of the music listening population that knows band X exists.

yeah, i can understand that music can be classified as obscure, or not, and there are many levels of obscurity depending on what music you know (like your example), and it still doesn't help me figure out what you'd like.

there are other people on this forum that are considered people who like "obscure" music. apparently i would be one of them. yet i doubt i have many similiar tastes in music as them. i might have more bands in common comparing to someone who only listens to mainstream music, it all depends on the person.

but yes, you can spot it when you see it -- mostly because it isn't something you hear on the radio 50 times a day /images/graemlins/smile.gif that's not a hard one /images/graemlins/smile.gif doesn't mean it won't be on the radio in 2 years, though. and surely doesn't mean the person who is looking for something new to listen to won't love it.

i'm new to this thread, but albums where i don't press the skip button at all...

beatles - abbey road
red hot chili peppers - californication
jay-z - blueprint
kanye west - college dropout
common - be

on a side note, its very rare to find an album where there's not one track you skip. even the greatest album will have one odd song that you don't particuarily care to listen to, while there may be another not so great album with tracks that are all just okay but worth listening to.
