View Full Version : Who here owns a nice knife?

This is a spinoff of the gun thread. I don't have a gun because I don't know anything about them, and I'd probably just use it to kill myself anyway.

But I like knives. My favorite folder is the SOG Flash 2. When you first get it, I gaurantee you'll sit there opening and closing it for hours. The spring mechanism is so smooth and fun.

i have a couple of nice butterfly knives that i bought in europe summer of '99. I brought them home in my carry on and had no problems getting them through customs.

You can beat the hell out of one of these and it'll last ya forever. As good a general purpose knife as they come. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a city boy, I have no need for a knife. But I think they are cool.

Sell me on one.

(Cross posted in the gun thread, but replace knife with gun)

I have a KA-BAR too, and they're good. You can get them on ebay for $30-$40.

Also check out the Spyderco Spyderfly. (http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=1)

Quite a few, nothing I would call a collection but a variety for utility, fishing, and hunting mostly.

I don't have any "exotic" knives though.

it would be less scary in broad daylight then? i guess i am still missing your point.

i guess if a knife is primarily used to cut up vegetables, it cannot also cut up people?

is the primary use for ANY knife to scare people anyway?

Holding a kitchen knife in an icepick grip is even less effective, it limits your reach and manuverability.

Murderers in horror movies are generally slow and stupid, and wouldn't last 10 seconds against a good knife fighter.

This is a good knife. The ka-bar is an ok knife for the money because it's very cheap but it's nothing special. I would never buy a KA-BAR. If you want a good knife you have to go carbon V, san mai, AUS8A, AUS6, or some other high quality steel. If you swipe on your arm and it doesn't take the hair off it's not a good knife IMO. If I can't shave with it I throw it away.

Here is a good stainless that you can shave with.

http://www.sogknives.com/sealpup.htm
http://www.sogknives.com/Fixed-Blades/sealpupelite/E37T.htm

You can find them cheaper on e-bay, they are worth every penny. Since their sharp, they are much safer to use.

cold steel makes some good stuff as well.
The recon tanto is a good knife that you can use and abuse.
http://www.coldsteel.com/13rtk.html
You can get factory seconds for much cheaper off of that website.

There are cheaper knifes that are high quality:

I used to have a whole list of high quality

The blade steel is not quite as good quality as most knives in the $50-$100 range these days. Also, a lot of people say the stacked leather handles don't hold up well when it's wet, but I've never used it wet, so I can't confirm this.

I have a SOG Gentleman.. have had it for 5 or 6 years I think. It seriously needs sharpening but I never carry it anymore so I haven't gotten around to it. I like it though, simple and all stainless. I've never been a fan of the plastic handled knives. As a general purpose pocket knife it has worked well though.

KABAR website (https://www.kabar.com/product_detail.jsp?productNumber=1217&mode=categor y&categoryId=1,2,3,7&categoryName=Military/Tactical)

Ok the Rockwell hardness of the KABAR is 56-58 which is respectable.

The steel is 1095 Carbon which is a good steel but there are better blends. I don't know of any high end commercial company that uses that steel. I change my vote from ok to respectable but SOG/coldsteel definitely make better.

I could use one of those KA-BAR knives... I've been thinking about getting one for general camping and stabbing purposes for a few years... think I'll check 'em out.

As for knives that I own...

Got one of these badboys to clear out the blackberry bushes near my house. It's actually kind of dull and has a serrated blade. But, with enough velocity, you can cut through a lot of stuff.

If you want to look at some really nice knives, look at the Display Case at http://www.knifenetwork.com. It's in the forums. This is a board mainly for custom, handmade knifemakers (of which I am one, when I have the time). There's some very cool stuff posted there.

This is my favorite knife -- unlike some of the nicer kitchen knives I own, this one cost $9. Funny - I have these knives I paid a lot for, and they're great knives, but I find myself worried about them, making sure no one abuses them, whatever. This one is sharp, it takes a beating, it's durable. It's cheap as hell, and is now almost the only knife I use for everything in the kitchen. You can get them in most any kitchen store in China Town.

And yeah, it looks kinda cool also.

I've used this as my chef's knife for about two years now: Damascus rules (http://www.meilleurduchef.com/cgi/mdc/l/en/boutique/produits/chf-k03.html)

It's probably the best chef's knife I've ever used, and I've used just about every high-quality chef's knife available in NA. It holds an excellent edge for ages, is very light, feels fantastic in my hand, and looks great with the damascus-like fold marks.

Other than that I've got a semi-decent 4-inch folding knife for fishing and used to carry something similar to
this (http://209.35.185.42/ShopSite/Colonel_Conk_Straight_Razor_504B.html) in my darker days a few years ago. I stopped carrying it for a variety of reasons (such as it's stupid to ever carry something that is so strictly offensive) and wouldn't recommend anyone every carry one.

I've carried the same ka-bar for years in any kind of climate you can name. the handle and blade have held up very well. but you can get it with a Kraton handle it you desire. It's also now available with a partially serrated blade.

For years beginning back in the 1970s the military has issued the Camillus knives that were a really crappy ka-bar knock-off. The design is slightly different and the quality is for [censored]. Ka-Bar was out of business for years and just began making knives again around 1989 or so IIRC. If the knife you bought was actually "surplus" it was probably a Camillus.

I seldom carry a folder, but when I do now it is approximately this web page (http://www.bestknives.com/ben32parauts.html)

Problem is that you can't carry it in most states. Fortunately my state still allows some freedoms. I sort of like autos but they are a hassle. But all of them seem like a hassle which is why I seldom have one on me. I always have to go find a knife if I actually need one.

I carry this in my car Becker Bowie (http://www.1sks.com/store/becker-knife-and-tool-combat-bowie.html)

http://www.1sks.com/images/camillus/cam-bk9-2_sm.jpg

And I always carry a folder in my pocket, usually this. (http://www.1sks.com/store/benchmade-550-griptilian.html)

http://www.1sks.com/images/benchmade/bm-550_sm.jpg

But being a hardware junkie, I have many fine knives and vary my use depending on circumstances.

I used to carry a semi-cheap butterfly knife when I was younger, but I accidently brought it to the airport with me one time when I was running late for a flight. There was no time to mail it home and it was either lose the knife or miss a flight to go see my girl, needless to say the knife ended up in a logon airport trash can.

Now I carry a leatherman. Not nearly as menacing looking, but a lot more useful and it doesn't freak out bouncers and such.

I'd love to get an old-school "rebel without a cause" style switchblade. I know they're illegal in most states, but I've heard you can skirt the law by buying one without a spring and then putting it in yourself. Anyone know where to get one of these? I wouldn't carry it around or anything, I just think it'd be neat to have.

I've seen some switchblade DIY kits on ebay. I have no idea what kind of quality they are. Probably not great considering the prices.

As for normal switchblades, they're legal for law enforcement and military personnel in most areas, so you could try to befriend one and have them buy it for you. I don't know what companies make good traditional looking switches, but Masters Of Defense (http://www.mastersofdefense.com/) makes some seriously badass tactical autos.
