In regards to the bump/no bump debate, how about the columns "Views" and "Replies" get removed from the main forum screen (that information could be available inside the thread - I doubt it influences someone one way or the other whether they want to read a particular thread), and replaced with "Original Posting Date". Then enable the software so that the individual user can sort on "Original Posting Date" or "Last Post". That way the people who want the bump feature can use it, and the people that want to know which threads are new since the last time they visited will be able to easily see that.
