View Full Version : Folding top pair on the flop...

I got burned earlier today when I defended my blind with ATs, flopped top pair on a raggy board, called down and got owned.

I was going to checkraise here... too weak of a fold? Also, should I just bet out with MP in the hand?

I think you can lay this one down pretty safely.

I think the fold is OK. Im pretty clueless as to why you would want to bet, though.

Why wouldn't you bet? Are you afraid of being dominated? MP could also be raising a draw. That said I would still have to fold here, though I would call down if I had bet

I would check/raise.

Since the board is K83 I think a fold is pretty easy on this flop if it's 2 to us after we check. That's why I like checking. If we bet, the PFR is going to raise hands that beat us (same with MP) but if we check, we get worse hands to bet and an Opp. to check/raise. "Minimize loss, maximize win"

EDIT: **What was implied by my post is that check/raising is far better than betting, imo. If we needed to protect our hand and had a good read that betting would do that, I would agree that betting would be better. But, I dont see what we would want protection from in this hand.**

Bet the flop if you are going to hate this situation.

Is this a standard defend for everyone ?

It is for me. I'm an idiot though.

I think the fold is fine - the problem is that even if you have the best hand currently it will be impossible to protect your hand, and also difficult to play it aggressively with confidence. This is of course assuming decent, or passive opponents.

Bet the flop.

Whoever said you don't need protection on this hand is dead wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if MP is raising for a free card.

What are you protecting it from? Do you think a flush draw is folding?

Not from an UTG raise and MP hanging around.

No problem folding here. While it looks like you're getting a good price pf, I don't like defending here with this hand against UTG raise and MP cold call. Yeah you got TPNK, but your relative position stinks, your hand is vulnerable, the board is draw heavy and the pot is smallish. Let her go.

I fold this preflop, but I'm a wimp from bb.

On flop, my tendency, right or wrong, would have been to check, planning to check/raise. But once it's 2 back to me, I fold also.

On reflection, though, I think that the potential flush draw makes this a bad line. Perhaps it's better to bet out on the flop, against 2 opponents. That might give more information.

I have no problem with this.

Yes. If we're playing this hand on the flop, we're leading out.

Getting 5-1 odds on the call this is pretty standard for me.
