View Full Version : Help me buy a car!

Ok, I know nothing about cars. Some guy asked me why I don't just get a viper, and I responded that I dont even know what a viper is. I know nothing.

I just moved to LA a week ago, and I desperately need a car to get around. I'm aiming for the $20,000 - $25,000 price range, although I could be suckered into paying as much as $30,000.

I think I want a luxury car (definately not a jeep or suv or anything like that). I'm under the impression that anything new will be way out of my price range, so something used that's 2-4 years old will be fine.

I'll be blunt. I want something that will impress girls, something that a 19 year old girl would look twice when she sees a 19 year old guy driving it.

Not only do I know nothing about cars, I know nothing about buying them. Is carmax a good place to buy one? I don't even know how that works really.

I want something small and compact. I listen to music all the time and play it very loud, so a decent sound system is important too. Other than that, looks are the only other important thing. I don't really like weird looking cars. I probably want it either black or silver, but like I said, I do want something that can potentially turn heads.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Dude - you asked this in MIRC.

Here are the definitive answers.
* Subaru WRX
* BMW 330 Coupe
* Honda S2000 Convertible (2 seater)
* Infinity G35 Coupe
* Pontiac Solstice 2006 (Sick Convertible)

Coupe is 2 doors if you didn't know already

So you, a 19 year old, plan on playing at commerce and other places in LA or vegas even though you've been on TV for playing poker, have had quite a few articles written about you, and have a blog (how many people read this? I don't know) with your picture on it.

This should be interesting...

To be honest, you're going to have a hard time turning heads in LA. Not as tough as Vegas (where Bentleys and Ferraris seem to grow on trees), but tough. Every 19 year old kid seems to have a BMW. The ones that don't have imports that seem to have had about $90,000 put into them.

Just get a car that you like, and be happy with it. My next car will be some sort of an unassuming sedan, probably a cheaper benz, since I like them and don't give a [censored] about what other people like. They'll run about $25k for a decent small model a couple years old.

Black/Silver are also my 2 options when I look at cars.

A lot of guys have Acuras. Look at those perhaps. You can get them under $30k no problem, even new.

get a classic. since i assume you won't have to commute to a job, and your primary qualifications seem to be style, value and comfort, you should definitly be considering an older car- one that will A: be cheap to maintain, B: get you laid C: maintain it's value (newer cars depreciate in value like crazy)

here's one of my favs- the 62 lincoln... suicide doors, sweet lines, etc. it was the car that morpheus and co rolled in in the first matrix.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/bholdr/62lincoln.jpg

this particular one sold for 13k, you'd want to spend a couple more thousand on a stereo, some dice for the mirror, maybe some mods for a little more power, etc...

Infinity G35 Coupe - looks cool and is in my price range

Go with the G35 Coupe for sure. If for some stupid reason you must pick something else from this list, then the Z is 2nd, followed by the 330 and then the Z3.

I'll second Duke's comment about how none of these cars are actually going to turn many heads in L.A. I guess they'll get you to a 'respectable' level, at least. If you really want to stand out, you're going to have to get something more unique - maybe some sort of classic car and fix it up.

I'm confused. Are you looking for a luxury (4 door) for 20-25k or a sports coupe for 30k+? If you're looking for a luxury car in the mid-20's i'd look into the Acura TSX. If that's not the case, Any of the above mentioned cars are great. However, I prefer the S2000 or 350Z. Also, driving an automatic in any one of the above mentioned cars is an insult they're meant for the 6-speeds.

hey zee,

are you going to school in california?

is a large portion of your income coming from playing life games there?

if not, why the hell do you want to live in the most expensive city in the States when your income comes from the internet. take a look at how much youre going to be spending in the future. for what?

i cant comment on the quality of life in california, but it just seems like a bad move, and now buying a luxury car, come on man, these arent good investments.

before you were in europe. i thought that was awesome. you could've wound up in spain and lived there cheaply, and did visa runs into tangiers and traveled through africa, the med, europe, etc.

Audi A4. Won't look like you're trying too hard, nice and clean looking, runs well. Will "impress" most girls (simply because your car is not a piece of junk). It's already been said: In LA without dropping some serious money, your car won't turn many heads.

Zee,

Get the 350Z. It's great -- I got a good deal at the Santa Monica dealership. All the "betties" love it, but more importantly, it's a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

Good to see more NoVa folks out here in SoCal (I'm from Annandale). You'll love it.

if you can spring for it, you could probably pick up a 2004 used STi, which is the WRX except more better.

i.e. 300 hp (fast)

except: no sound system

however i wouldnt have gone with the factory system anyway if sound is important to you.

Use your left leg while it's not on the clutch to move the steering wheel, right leg for gas, left arm for the drink (maybe a spare finger or two on the wheel), and right to shift. When you need to shift just let your left leg off of the wheel, again 1-2 spare fingers from the left hand on the wheel.

Pretty simple actually. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was in a car where the driver was literally eating a bowl of soup, talking on the phone, shifting and weaving through traffic all at the same time. You can do virtually everything you can with an automatic once you get used to driving a manual, although once or twice there was some help from the passenger. Learn how to drive one, it won't take long.

Having driven both, I must say driving a manual (or stick as you say) is so much more fun than automatic. In South Africa the standard is manual and driving automatics is the exception. You just have to get used to it. Seriously.

I aggree with the M3- but if you get one you MUST learn how to drive a stick. an automatic M3 is PATHETIC.

ZERO respect to anyone that drives an automatic BMW.

[/ QUOTE ]

this is just absurd. the M3 has the best automatic transmission on the market in the SMG. not even ferrari's FI cluthless automatic touches it.

you can drive it like a full auto. or like a reg. manual, depending on your mood. and it shifts faster than a person could ever try.

go to the M3 forums, half the people on there have the SMG and love it.

sounds like the perfect answer for his inability to drive stick, as well as driving in traffic alot.

Are you attempting to infer you don't have more control over your car when you are driving a manual transmission? If so, you're wrong.

It has nothing to do with "being a man." I won't say it doesn't make driving more enjoyable (because it does) but there are other issues. It is ignorant to think otherwise.

Justin, I'm 21... I make alot but probably not as much as you... just do what i did and spring for the god damn BMW

I Got a 330Ci SMG fully loaded leather, nav, the works for 47k... 10k down 710$ a month 60 months (paying it off way sooner than that though)

BMW is where it's at and i recommend you get it soon as the E46 model line is going out and i don't like the E90 coupes as much personally (thats a general bimmer nut sentiment also)

I'd go so far to say you should just get an M3, interlagod blue, cinnimon leather with SMG... it's 60 dimes and honestly if you can't get laid in that thing you have problems

Honestly... that car is so hot it makes me sad i did'nt get it
