this could obviously be a well placed bluff, but at the end of the day you don't have any outs if you push or call and he has it.

and he is going to certainly have outs if you just call / push when he hasn't yet made a hand.

easy fold.

It was probably a bluff since most people don't checkraise the river, but it's still a good fold. If the spade bugged you at all, just check it down.

Why is this "probably" a bluff? You think he called the flop with no hand for the sole purpose of checkraise bluffing the turn? And he does this more often than he actually gets dealt a hand which somehow connects with the board?

Good fold. I think you should bet more on the flop. I know you are trying not to blow him out or whatever but which hands is he really going to call 4 and not 7? And this way, even though you underbet the turn, he still only had to call 4 to win 18 which is correct odds for a flush draw.

Your flop bet was not enough. If he wants to draw to two pair or a flush, make him pay for it.

I think the turn fold was ok, but your turn bet was not ok. It was another weak bet. Either check behind and be prepared to call a value bet on the river, or make a more substantial bet than $7. If it were me I probably would have checked.

These are the sorts of hands where I have been not folding in the past so I have been trying to take a different approach.

Initially I would have been betting the pot on the flop, the pot is then bigger so making a pot bet again on the turn (he has his bigger hand calls and takes my stack).

Currenly I am trying a more NL type approach of betting 3/4 ish on the flop (if I have somthing or not after a raise) then following it up with a half pot bet on the turn, trying to build the pot slowly and keeping it smaller.

At this point I am not sure when and how to vary my betting and I think in this case how to use position well. But the more cautious play has helped me stop some of my initial bleed and has led to me getting some of my big hands paid off.

Posting more hands and more study and thought required.

In general, I prefer to bet the full pot on the flop and then only 1/2 or 2/3 on the turn. This is because on the flop there are much larger implied odds and also it is more frequently multi-way. It is all well and good to bet smaller than the pot in NL, but only if it is still giving incorrect odds to draw.

bet pot on flop. check the turn. your turn bet is weak
