I'm ready to get back at the game. I played just a little 1-4-8 Texas Holdem about a year ago and have Turbo software to practice with. At the casino table I made two big blunders that I need help with before trying a live game again.

1. Twice, I thought the betting was finished and I exposed what I thought was the winning hand. How do you know the rounds of betting are over?

2. I tried to re-raise, but was told by the dealer that my raise must be double the raise in front of me. Is that a universal rule or just that cardroom's custom? My wife knows I'm an idiot- I don't want the whole table to know it!

1. A round of betting is over after everybody has had a chance to act- either betting, calling, raising checking folding, whatever the action may be. After everybody is done the next round progresses.

2. As for raises having to be twice the prior bet, this is a universal rule as far as I know. Anytime I have played no limit or spread limit it has been this way.

1. Wait for the dealer to say "Show me a winner" or something similar. A good dealer will always say something.

2. The explanation you were given is not entirely correct, but it's close enough for now. The main thing is, don't be afraid to ask the dealer how much you can raise. After you've played for a while the mechanics of spread-limit betting will make a lot more sense.
